Lately, I have just really made up my mind to try something different. In the past, I have had every color of bird under the sun, but I have always really liked blacks the best. I've decided to let my 12 & 14 year old boys keep all of the reds and other colors and start focusing on breeding blacks. Will this impact the roll of the offspring too much by leaving out color? I'm only going to breed good deep rolling birds in black or black & white. The boys will keep any reds or blue sports that pop up.

Hey brudahpete, if you have reason to believe your family is established (all the rolling traits and physical attributes are set), then go for it.
However, if you have not developed a family yet, then my advice is to first breed for your Ideal Birmingham Roller.
When you have established this Ideal BR within your "family", then is the time to "experiment" with breeding colors within that same family, but all the while being careful to not compromise the Ideal to get color. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Thanks, Tony. My family of birds is from a very established family in Safford, Arizona. There are some guys who have won Arizona state flys with this family. You are a good one to ask as you are in the breeding buisness. Do you find very difficult to get consistent color, I'm sure it takes a few years to do.

Brudahpete, Any time you breed for characteristics other than performance you are handicapping yourself. How much is the handicap? Only you know that.
I wouldn't do it
P.S. It is very difficult to identify which of the black birds up there is spinning best, turning the kit, kit leader etc. Variety helps you to identify your birds.
Have fun with them! Keith Maxwell

I appreciate the advice. I'm not going to completely go black, I have whites as well. I'm looking to breed only deep quality rollers.

I use to have 12 rollers all black what I did was slant cut on the left tail on one slant cut on the right on another and straight cut across on another and cut just the middle on one of them ..I would just fly those with one with tail uncut..then every few days I just remove one with uncut tail after evaluation and put another.thats how I did it with all blacks and when I had all reds I threw in one black and that was easy to see the black only..I turn it into a fun thing that's what its all about....... now Brudapete make sure if you do shoot yourself in the foot you have a Doctor around. my only advise I can give you..:)good luck ---------- Ralph

Trust me, I'm having my fill of doctors right now! 2 surgeries each to go on my legs; & no, I didn't shoot myself!!!! At least it gives me some time to revamp the old loft and add some new!

If you have an established family and you want to go black or mostly in that neighborhood...that is fine to do. As long as you stock is top quality in the Black Department....as long as you breed best to best and then you should be fine...but if push came to shove and you found that a bird that is not black is doing what you want..then put your color preference on the back burner....
Keith is right too....it is not wise to chase a color over performance...but if you blacks have the performance...and you are breeding Blacks to blacks you should be ok...look at Scott Campbell...most of his birds are dark check...and he does fine..but he is also breeding for performance fist and foremost....
You can look at Tony..a Majority of his birds are Red...sometime you just follow the roll and the color is picked for you.....in my loft....I have a rainbow of "standard" colors....but I pick the roll over color ...period.

I've been involved with pigeons for most of my life but I've decided to try and do a strain of blacks with white without compromising the roll. I will not breed a wimpy roller. I guess I'm going through a phase. Maybe it's the beginnings of that mid-life crisis that I've heard so much about! Lol!

Gary Richards in Safford, AZ and his brother have been in the roller scene for years. My cousin got his birds from them and has left the state leaving me a huge loft of birds. This strain has always been great performers in the roll and are extremely stabil.

brudhapete,
I wish you heal fast. Take care of those injuries of yours.
I was squatting one time and hurt my left knee. Now when it is cold, I can feel the pain.
With respect to developing your own family, you are the only one that knows your birds real well. Good luck!

Thanks, I do hope to be back in the regular swing of things soon. as for competing, I don't think I will have a kit ready to go as I'm still just getting these birds settled. I have been without rollers for 2 1/2 years now and receiving 80 or so caught me flat footed. Bob (Showlow) & I have got to go through this stock & decide what he's getting & what I'll keep. My two boys will roll the rest!
