I've been browsing this website for almost a year, but never joined in. I kept on coming back and I don't know why until I realized one of the reasons. I kept on coming back because this website has good infos (and probably nice people)!

So I finally joined in although I don't have any rollers. I keep homing pigeons. I've never seen rollers fly in the sky yet, but my friend has baby rollers on training where he promised to invite me to see them fly. I can't wait when that time comes.

My area is full of hawks. Every week I get checked out or attacked by this resident hawk. That prevented me from having rollers. I hated it. The hawk already got 2 of my pigeons and injured 2. Maybe someday I will get a chance to have rollers.

Hi everyone....

I raced homers for one young bird season and decided it was just too expensive for me... I live a long way from the pigeon club...
I have always had pigeons... I guess since I was 11 years old...
At one time I had three hundred homers.... So I am experienced with pigeons....

I just recently started looking for a hobby that my son and I can enjoy together... Rollers seem like a great hobby for us....

I have been invited next weekend to see a friend fly his first competition flight...

I will have many questions for you guys...

My first one is how much should a beginner be prepared to pay for his first Roller Pigeons???
Do you guys think I should try to start out with good high dollar birds or cheaper birds to learn with???

That depends who you getting them from..My first rollers were given to me.free...but its always good to be prepare and also how much pigeons you want to get, half a dozen .a kit(20)..

?- #2 --If you are serious about yourself and who you are.do you go into thing half hearted . only you know that.I would always start with the best and take it from there don't want to reinvent the wheel.now you can go out to many flys that you can and learn from the experts ask questions build yourself two kitbox if 3 the better.you going to need that to build your team in moving them around ..you have to ask that ? to yourself and decide for yourself..I tell you one thing its a great sport for you and your son.what ever you decide have fun...

Hey rodsd welcome to the site . If I were you I would go on this fly meat a few guys and watch there birds perform don't rush to buy birds look at loft and kit boxes and make a wise choice as to if you will compete one day or just have birds how long before your son is after girls and your feeding birds alone etc. Don't spent a lot of money Tony here has good birds an the are priced far.

Good Luck

Welcome to the newbies. About your question of how much to spend on birds, hang out with a few fanciers, look for what you like in the birds and trust me, you'll end up with some. Once you have a couple of quality birds, breed your own. I've rarely met a roller man (or woman) who wasn't willing to help a newcomer out. The more birds in the area, the more fun can be had by all.

Rod, too bad about your BOP problem, hope they'll lose interest & move on. Having raised many different types of pigeons, I can say that I love rollers the best. You are more in touch with them as they are stay at home birds. You aren't driving a couple hundred miles out to release them and you get to see their stuff from the time you release to the trap.
