I have a 2' x 3' wire cage attached to the front of my kitbox, over the trap. I leave it attached when the birds are not flying so they can get out and get some sunshine during the day. Let's call it an aviary.

So this morning a few of the birds were sitting in the aviary and I was facing them. I was about to go back in the house when suddenly, something smacked me (pretty hard!) in the back of my head and kept on going at a very fast clip - a hawk!!! Seriously! A hawk dive-bombed me in my own backyard! I think it was a redtail but I was so shocked I can't be sure.

Is this a common thing? I thought they generally kept their distance from humans.

A Cooper's Hawk will do stupid sh%t like that all the time. It's like they dont even see you... I guess they are so focused on the pigeons when attacking that people become invisible....

Last year, I was kicked back in a lawn chair and had my feet proped up on the side of the loft. Had a coop come in and land on the wire about 6 inches from my feet. Hung there a couple of seconds and then dropped to the ground and started walking back and forth under my feet looking for a way in. It didnt even notice me until I moved my legs!

A hawk did try to get my birds 3 feet from me. I can almost touch its tail.

There was a news a long time ago where a girl was attacked by BOP on a stadium. She got injured and the BOP was relocated.

There was also an incident where a BOP was suspected on a missing dog in a kennel. That was news, too.

The resident hawk I have here is bold. I can go probably 5 feet towards it and it wouldn't budge. Who knows what hawks are thinking now. Maybe they are emboldened to attack humans now.

A few years ago I had a Coop that was chasing my birds come within 3' feet of smacking me in the chest. The Coop whipped around the front of my kit box and all I saw was eyes and outstretched talons coming at me. It threw on the brakes and somehow managed to fly backward, turn and get around me. I count myself as being lucky because I didn't have a shirt on.

I am surprised to hear how bold the hawks can be! Think I'll lock down for awhile after that incident though. It was not a subtle message, lol.

Hector I remember at your place watching one of your kits and a Bop almost knocked us into your pool, also one time I had a Bop go after me while I had a bird in hand, and boy he put up a fight kind of scared me a bit. Yes they get more than bold, as I said in a post in Oct we have two Bop that killed and did not even eat, them just ripped them up and went for more. We have been in lock down since Oct.

when my birds come down, they are usually very hungry, there are two of them that will commonly buzz me or smack me in the head. That hawk was just telling you he wanted to be fed a roller.Sounds like a hawk that shows up for dinner there quite often....Aloha,Todd

My brother got attacked by a red tail when we were kids. He's got a great gash scar on his right shoulder for proof! I guess that's what he gets for trying to peek into her nest!

Exactly Hector.. If a hawk was coming for me/my face, I would otherwise duck or ruin it.
