Will the birds notice this trap from the air easily or should I paint it a different color? How long should they stay on top in the training cage? I have a already had them on there for an hour.

If I were you I would tap one side of their wing and set them on the trap landing board. Once they are use to the landing board laying 90 degree to the kitbox they'll know its the door. I think you dont have to change any colors they will look for the landing board and know. ---------- Good Game Loft

Get them real hungry, Your birds arnt scared of you, stand in the flight pen, with the birds on the platform, and call them in, either with a whistle or feed in a can, do that a couple times in a row with out giving any feed, then when your done, feed them, they'll get the hang of it in no time ---------- Tony.

Kit birds aren't tame too much, they'll come to me but barely.. because if I get them too tame, I feel bad to fly them.. maybe i might do that Yang..

To train them to that trap , hook that cage some how over the trap with them in it, shake a can of feed from inside the loft and they will come through the traps.Like was already said they have all kinds of view to home to.

Andrew, I like your setup a lot. I would suggest switching over to a 4" P.V.C. drop trap or at the minimum reduce the size of your existing traps. It looks really big and where you live I'm sure there are a lot of coons, possum, and such, that could get through your traps. :-(

yeah Oldfart is right ...and I do what JDA suggested too put cage over the trap door and to top and leave it open all day they will go in and out as please to drink water when hot after a week of that put on top close trap no feed all day make sure you put a piece of wood or something on top of cage so the sun don't get to them all day you know what I mean then in the evening supper time whistle them in train them to your whistle you will see they will be train no if and butts. now get the show on the road.. and don't get attach to your pigeons fly them hard.. ---------- Ralph

Check this out, I picked up an old training cage from a friend.. Oh yeah there are no coons or possums around here.. Plus when I fly I will be watching the whole time. If there is an emergency, I will shut the kit trap and leave flight pen trap open..

The last 2 pics are perfect. Yeah that was the way I did mine. After that I remove the cage, open the trap, raise the bob and let the birds come and go. They will fly in small circle, come back, go in and out, basically trying to explore the environment. Then you call them in with whistle or sound.
I made my landing board 2.5 feet length though. That way when they are under attack by a hawk, they just land quick straight through it. Sometimes it is so scary to see because they are like jets landing on an aircraft carrier and they can stumble.
BOP will teach your birds to land rather fast.
You can also shove those birds to the bob to teach them how to get in.

Good! And they should be hungry enough so they trap in within a minute of landing.Alot of guys build the training cage so it goes in front of the trap and wraps right around to cover the roof so they can be on top. Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

Andrew,
Very nice setup.
But i would fly them straight out of the kitbox, just by opening the door. And let then come in again through the kitbox's door too.
And i would use the flightpen only to let them in the open when i'm not planning to fly them.
Just my opinion, Jan

Thanks and Welcome to the site Jan!
It might be a little late for that.. lol I don't want to confuse them now too much; They have started to train from this one and I have a reason for this too. I want to let them go through the flight pen, then into the kit, so if I ever have an emergency and there is a bird that didn't come back, I can just shut all the birds up in the kit and lock the traps, and just leave the flight trap open, so nothing can get in and harm the rest. :)

The simplisity,, is what I like about your loft. You will be able to getum to home eisly. For me with settlintg birds.. It's to keepum responsive to you and your calls... they should be scrambling when you trigger them, ither with a whistle or just your presence. And for me it's just letting them up, just flying like you dont care if you loose a few. if you get too atached you will be setting yourself up for heart acke,, hope all works out well.. and agian I really like your setup It was always hammerd into me to make your lofts look nice as alot of people think our birsd are flying rats... And with a set up like that you are proving they are more than a sterotype... Nice job...

Thanks a lot guys! But square I will always care, no matter what, if I even lose one to anything. Not as much if they just fly away. But to see them get taken away by the BOP.. p*sses me off.. lol

Andrew if the birds are real young I train for three to five days and then turn them out hungry on the roof to sit and feed them and trap right back in.
If they are older birds and have flown before I settle them three weeks and occasionally one will still fly off.

They are not real young.. They are about 4-5 months old and I have flown 6 birds 4 times already.. This is a new trap so how long should they be trained to this particular 'Trap'?

I rember in Quincy it was a snowey morning and I thought I would show off this bird one last time before it went in the stock pen,,, It was rocking 30ft+ it came outta one with perfect style wings out and WHAMMO!!!! it was like it was in the "Full Nelson",,, gone LOL

I did three years ago. Don't know what caused it though. The bird was one of my best and started a roll at 60 feet, executed a 30 footer & started another which ended with a thud! Broke her left wing & both legs. Snow was real icy at the time.
