ive been flying my birds for the last few weeks and the bop's there are at least 3 of them a family and they work together they have taken 6 birds since then,and they will not leave this area, what can i do about this problem besides locking up my birds,i can think of a few but i think there illegal.man i just love flying my birds and just don't want them locked up.

lol if you think they're illegal then chances are they ARE ILLEGAL.. haha well sometimes it's best to just lock them up for a bit..

You lock the birds up or do something your going to regreat and you end up with a bunch of bull you have to deal with like paying fines etc. and still be faced with the same problem. Not worth it trust me.

LOCK THEM UP!
Come spring you will be wishing that you had something to fly as well. Why feed them to the BOP now.

If you keep feeding them they will stay longer, and longer. Best to lock them up, and hope they move on.
Don't do anything illegal, fines, possible jail time, and hurting the hobby with another public incident isn't worth it.
Lock down and get some Donek's (sp)or orientals for next year.

Listen to silvertail on that all you be doing is adding more to the problem ...lock them up I use to hate that myself but if you really love your lil athletes saving them from the BOP is the way to go until its a lil safer to fly again.. ----------

Man, it's not worth it. You'll end spending more money than you think if you get caught. We got off easy and we still had to pay steep fines. The next guys wont be so lucky. they'll probably demand jail time plus a fine, so get those ideas out of your head.. please!

thanks all!!! I'm just a little upset with the bop's they are really a nuisance and i would like to let you guys know that i have no intention of doing anything that would put me or my family in jeopardy,i see most of you's on here all have the same problem that i do and you guys have been their and done that so i will take all of your info to heart believe me when i say it. i will lock the birds up and hope for the best, and hope that my birds will not become lazy and squatters i like birds that fly and roll. thanks again

They are probably staying there because they find food in your place. Definitely lockdown for now. I have this resident hawk that I am trying to outsmart by locking down my birds after an attack and wait for an opportunity to fly them when the hawk is not around. Having a BOP is a constant battle.
The fine for harming or killing hawk is around $10,000. You might add some jail time on it.

If you capture a BOP without harming it would they relocate it for you, or is that also out of the question? I dont get it, they shoot wolves and such for destroying livestock, but you guys can do nothing to protect your property..

Ther are only 2 predators that I know of that work in teams.
The Broad Wing hawk, he's a big one, size of a Red Tail with broader wings. There deadly when working together.
The Gos hawk, if they can't catch your birds, they will come back with friends. Alone or with friends thay are the worst pigeon eaters in the hawk family.
I'm from Canada & the laws are a little different up here. If your birds are getting hit you are allowed to kill them. Some use shot guns, some use traps. Traps work real good, because they are silent. Put a couple of cocks & a hen in a cage, on the roof of your coop, put a couple of leg traps around the cage tied off. It does not take long to get your hawk.
The local Homer club reported 163 confirmed kills 3 years ago.
A couple of hints: never fly your birds miday-the BOP's use the sun to hide in.
if you get hit lock them up for a couple of days, hopefully it moves on.
never fly when they are migrating, 1st of September to the end of October.
I fly my birds basically from the 1st of April until they are in full moult around the end of August. Yes it is a short fly season, but I am 1 of the few up here who flys a kit with old birds in it. Old birds being 5,6 upto 12 years old or older. I even fly my stock birds after breeding season, some of them anyways.

I fly old birds as well. I sure wish we had more sensible laws on BOPs here. Once a critter reaches "protected status" here, they're like completely free to do what they like.

Quality, You can add the Coopers hawk to your list. I have definitely seen them work together. I have noticed over the last 4 or 5 years that the Coopers in my area are getting to be alot more tolerant of each other which translates into more Coopers in the same area and birds that are always hungry. Used to be I could fly Mid day because the Coopers had already eaten, not anymore.

Mr Lipper no they will not relocate the bird and even if they do the bird would return remember these birds travel from one side of the world to the other. And it is illegal to trap them. Good Luck. You all please do the right thing like Smoke said we got off easy they might not go so easy next time plus it does not help our sport in the big picture they would love to have a new story to play on the news look how many times they keep changing the old one to keep reprinting it.

this is the heart of Los Angeles and there is no way they will let you kill or capture a hawk around here we just have to deal with it.back in the 80's i used to fly birds all day and never got hit in six years strange but its the truth,now its like these hawks our multiplying and seem to be every where.and they do work together,my kit was up about 300 ft and one hawk was to the south of the kit the other to the north both big hawks and one other was a smaller faster hawk he was the one chasing down the kit while the others boxed them in.
