How would you rate your fly season? You don't have to be in a club or anything, just want to know what every one thought of their fly seaon.
successful or not (not based on wins or losses) just good quality birds produced.

Well, I didn't win either the World Cup or the Fall Fly…...
Come to think of it I didn't even qualify…….

Seem like for every two steps forward, I take at least one back.
My old bird team was a shambles all year. I never had more than 8 birds on it that I would call "rollers".

My young birds were harassed so badly that there are only two birds that I feel comfortable promoting to the A team.
The latest hatch birds are barely starting to kit. They may be a total write off.
I banded 77 young birds this year, and by lockdown Oct 1 I only had 33 left.

I do not understand how you guys in the LA area do it. I can't even get an entire "A" team together not to mention a "B" team.

I put up a half decent score in the 11 bird fly, and pulled 4 birds to the breeder loft.
Maybe I'll get that half step forward next year.

Keith M., every kit flown in the finals in my region (9a)got hit by the falcon and in my case 2 falcons. All in all my year was ok. I managed to win to local club championships. I got lucky a couple of times.

Mild progress for me this year. Raised a few screamers which is always a bonus. Raised way more RDs than I ever have. Neither of the clubs I am in seem to want to fly anymore so all I have is the WC and FF anymore.

It wasn't great other than getting lucky in the W/C finals with a team that just went beyond thier potential on the right day.
Next year should be a good one barring any major losses,it takes me at least two seasons to build what I consider a good team, three seasons is even better.

I did not fly in the World Cup this year, a qualified judge was not brought in, so I chose not to fly. I won the NBRC 20 bird regional. My kit did the best that it ever had in competition, I was lucky to be able to set them up perfect AND had excellant weather on fly day. Had lousy windy weather for the Finals fly, and the same kit stunk up the joint. Bred some top notch birds last year and this year. I am stealing the cream of the A-team to keep the stock loft moving forward, so my kit will suffer for next year, but my stock loft should be kicked up a notch.

I kept 6 from year before last in my A team, just one favorite(pet). I gave my WC kit to a new guy. Bred 50 and am running two kits. I have moved a few around and got a pretty decent kit for now. We`ll see when the WC rolls around.
One thought for the new guys. Dont expect your birds to be "on" every time you let them out. If you want to see what you really have, "point" them twice a month.

basically I'm new to this hobby after being off for so long,i do not fly for competition nor am i in a club, with the birds i do have and fly i would say that i am having a very successful first year back in the hobby, now that the bop's are taking my birds and i have to lock them up this is a step backward for me as you can imagine,my breeding program is going well and the squeakers are healthy, i only bred about 12 so far and they are all good decent rollers about 20 footers and they love to fly for long periods and kit really well.i can think of a few positive things i can do for the following year, like take a look at my stock birds and see if i want to break them up and mix them up also take a look at my kit birds and see which ones i want in my A-team and B-team and see what i don't want in my loft, all in all I'm having a successful year and hope to some day fly in the W/C.

I have had pretty good success this year breeding. I had one pair produce six A-team birds plus some other really good rollers that have kitting issues so I just fly them and watch them roll all over the sky. Hope to be able to put up a decent kit for the WC. I lost the click pair in a freak accident so I am set back in the stock loft.

I'm on a roll for the time being....qualified for the finals in both the World Cup and the NBRC National Championship last year and this year against stiff competition. I'll ride this wave as long as I can, but the guys in this region won't leave me up there long! LOL! Now all I have to do is figure out how to keep the birds on top, between the regionals and the finals, considering the BOP, weather, and short days limiting flying to weekends only...it's a tall order for a working guy! I've pulled my first 05 birds for the stock loft from birds that I bred and flew out for two years....my first Ballrollers. LOL!, so I'm excited about that progress. My 07 breeding season was my best so far.....this year I split up my best pairs to produce some half-bros/half-sis possibilities and I think my percentages of real quality birds have gone down...but it's really too early for me to tell. I have 40 08 birds spinning 20+ ft. to work with.... Needless to say, the best pairs are going back together with fosters in 09! I'm very pleased with this family of rollers and plan to stay with them, though I am raising birds from other families for the sake of comparison of performance. My main objective with this family is too improve them through selection of multi-depth birds for the stock loft. Too many of them roll one depth....great kitting, great speed, great quality, great frequency...but one depth. So I lose too many birds, especially in the first year because of it.

I have had a good first year. I acquired my first birds, and made some good friends. I have 33 birds in kit boxes, some are really getting good. I have 4 solid cocks in the breeder loft, and 6 hens. I also have 2 pairs of foster that I let have a round or two for fosters for next year.
Lucky I do not have BOP problem right now. Hopefullt that doesn't change. My only losses have come from me learning how to manage the birds.
It will be fun to see what my birds are like as they compete with the club guys and hopefully my first WC and FF.
I am excited for the future and hope to learn a lot next year.

The 2008 fly season for me started out kind of rocky I was starting to think about hanging up the roller game and picking up my fishing poles. I then desided to give it my all have fun this year or give it up so I started getting my but up every morning and realy putting in the time to have a good year and it worked. I flew half the season with some realy good fly days and desided to move and relocate but all in all my year went well I'm fired up and ready to compete against all my old buds in the LA area again so lets get ready to rumble.lol

Well...I would be stupid if I did not say I am happy with the year.....

The breeding season went off without a hitch...this is the first year that most of my kit birds are actually pretty close to being all my Strain (Flashover).......I have got a handle on the birds...this year everything took a big step forward and the light bulb went on in my head on where I want to go...

I am points leader in our club flies.....I qualified for the W/C finals....with a second in the prelims......I feel I had them dialed for the finals...but mother nature gave me ALOT of wind and used my time out and that did not help....so its easy to say...Crappy fly...I took 1st and 2nd place spots with my A and B team for Fall Fly Prelim....

and I am currently in Second Place in the Fall fly.....Had the birds doing there thing..but they shut down at the 10 min mark...after 2 hours they were still flying and Eldon found the reason why my birds shut down...Cooper sitting on my fence waiting for the birds to land...They were harrased most of the last week of prep comp by the BOP...so they were spooooked....soooo...I am happy as a peach orchard...bore...

Now the rest of my life is anther story...LOL....

I am pleased with my season. I confirmed what I had hoped for in the stock pen by switching a few matings around and they produced well again. I dont think that I have raised as many top Q spinners as last year, yet, but have produced a higher percentage of adequate rollers. Hard to say for sure because many of the young birds are still developing.

This years breeding helped me identify 4 solid producing cockbirds and 1 new hen. It also identified for me some that need to be moved out of stock as they havent produced to my standard 2 yrs running. It wasnt good news, but I learned something. This year was better than last cpl b/c I have had to cull less for bad behaviors and rolldowns, I call it improvement.

I was competetive in the flies, able to manage my teams well and let them show what they are capable of. All-in-all Im satisfied, and yet I have much room to improve and grow. Adding 2 new prs to stock this winter.

I'll be putting siding on loft this winter too. THAT will be a huge improvement ... LOL. Money and time ... no big deal.

.... one step at a time .....

Worst season ever. Don't even want to go there. Lost a ton of birds that were smoking it and in the stock pen.

Well, back to the drawing board for '09.

My fly season was a learning experience for me. It was fill with highs and lows. The lows happen when i put to much trust in young birds. Thinking if i shut them down before a fly it would help them. But it only cause me to DQ. Another low was I would concentrate on beating the next man instead of paying attention to my pigeons. My last low happen during the fall fly finals which i had no control over. I got hit by Two falcons 1 minute and 30 seconds into my fly and they didn't let up. My highs was i learn from most of my mistakes. I got lucky in some major flys and i made some good friends along the way especially from ICRC,SGVRC,CPRC and my club CBRC. I know i can do better so i would rate my season with a C minus. I have to do better next season

Well I think it was a very good year considering that I had not flown in comps for a long time. I am flying with the Thunderbird Roller Club and those guys do have the goods and place well in the big flys. They have made me up my game which is a plus for me. You can stay in your backyard and fly for your self but I know I was not advanceing my program the way I should have. I was so nerveous for both the 11 bird fly (was 4th) and the 20 bird fly (3rd). These guys really have good birds and I need to be more disiplined in my training. I have some nice babies starting to spin, we will see what they are like in the spring. So it was good and I look for it to be even better in '09.

This season was more like building the basement for the house this year. I sacrificed my A team by taking the cream of the crop to the breeding loft. I built my breeding program to 17 pairs from 8. The reason for that is due to the short breeding season here in Ohio, from April to July, 8 breeding pairs will only yield about 30 youngsters max. I need to breed for numbers from the best to be able to select the best of the bunch.

However, I was able to breed more than 80 youngsters last year and what I see is great results from the youngsters thus far. I am in current lock down due to the winter months and also moving to a new house but usually the youngster in my family of birds show their extreme potential the second season flying.

Hopefully I keep the birds safe for the world Cup because I am in.

things went well for me this year,, banded 75+ birds and probally gave half of that away, built a new region and was able to make the score board, progresively inproving from the past years.Had a nice team of 20birds but that turned into 15 after the FF. been able to fly without loss this year as I haven't lost one yet...LOL however I told myself that the more I boasted about it the more likely it was to happen and it finally did...I told my self that as soon as I got hit by the one that matters I would stop flying, that happend two days ago,, and I was sick,, just as I was thinkin it and watching the kit,,, Whammo!!!! like the thing was reading my mind,,, sounded like a "paperbag" being popped... looked over the kit and was without the one bird I really liked,,, However last night it was in the loft alittle shaken up but alive and no wounds it was amazing that it survived a hit like that... So that was the end to a great season, I just put my pairs down for next year and it is looking good... Now with this new car to drive in comp meaning Region (9I) , us people in bako will be running full trottle in the years to come... thanx for a great topic BRO!!!!!!
