Would some of you post pics and sizes of your kit coops? I need to build some new ones and just looking for ideas.

Thanks,
Mike

Kit itself is 4ft x 4ft 6 1/2ft high in front and 6 ft high in back.. Walls are made with OSB and 2x4's. Good luck! This is just a plan that I made and then carried out, it works very well for me. You can otherwise have the crap fall through the floor or walk in and clean it yourself..

Also the kit doesn't have to have legs on it, it can be on the ground just make sure it is sealed well.. :)

For your own good, dont make a kit box deeper than three feet as most people can't reach inside to the back of a deeper box. Also you need to make the door no wider than your shoulders as some may escape by you when your feeding while on lock down.

Kopetsa,

I like your loft, when I saw it the first time I thought it was a breeder loft. I have found that a small kit loft somewhere in the 3'x4' works best for flying. I keep mine dark most of the time, just enough light to get a drink. The birds seem to kit tighter this way. I do think I am going to copy your loft for another breeding coop if you dont mind, its great...

Andrew and CV,

How do your birds kit together, cooped the way you do it? I have never flown kits like this, I have free flown but being loose all the time would not be an accurate observation. Do you know of any competition guys flying this way?

I dont think it has much to do with kitting. It helps with keeping them calm and not fighting, breeding, nest building and wasting energy... In theory keeping them really close together in the coop keeps them close in the air..

Lipper, you got my opinion right on the nose. I was always finding eggs and other foolishness in a bigger kit box.

Yes unfortunately, I believe we are right on this one...These guys have sure shown nice lofts and birds here. What exactly do you do with Doneks? I have heard of them but have no clue?

I fly for my own enjoyment and haven't ever competed with my birds. I do keep my kit birds in a nice 3 foot cube with a wire mesh floor. It's not real dark as passive sunlight from underneath is available to the birds to eat & drink by. You can keep twenty or so birds in a three foot cube comfortably.

Never had a Donek or cared to find out what it was.

I am thinking of going three foot cubed as you do..No that is what I am going to do.. I am wondering how well the wire floor will work for me in the winter though, or if I would be better with wood? Wire would be perfect in the summer...I am also trying to figure out a way to keep my water thawed without some big gawdy bulb heater.. I was kind of wondering how electric tape might work?

Rick, I use ground corn cobs on my floors, they soak up all the moisture. I rake this around until it needs cleaning, about once a week. It's pretty good actually, I use V perches mostly, so by the time droppings hit the floor they are dry..

I agree with 3 foot depth. I have 4 foot depth for my homers and I can't reach them with my short (Asian) arm.
