That's all you need if they are good stock and you can pick up 1 or 2 pairs for fosters. Before long 2 will be 4, then 6 and on and on. I started out with 4 pairs this last breeding season and was looking at my kit boxes yesterday wondering how the hell I raised over 50 youngsters this year.

wow those are nice birds roller boi how long have you had them? and are you new to the site if you are welcome: lots of cool ppl. here and great tips too.by the way i'm sure you know that clipping the wings or plucking them will take a long time for them to grow back, what i usually do is get some tape 1" masking tape and i tape 6 or 7 of the flight feathers together and that will keep the birds from flying away, once you know they are homed you can take the tape off gently try not to damage the feathers and your ready to go. What family of birds to you have? Where did you buy them from? I was wonder because they don't have bands on thier leggs. Most people into roller band the birds so you know the year they were born and who the parrents were. Stolen birds will not have bands on them. That is why I ask who you got them from. Thanks for your reply BIll C

Instead of clipping or taping wings. Take ordinary dish soap & put them on the wings. This makes the wings stick together & they can't fly. When you want the soap off, let them have a bath.

Those flight feathers won't grow back till they moult out, probably next year.Better if you pluck em,one by one then they will grow back in a few weeks. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

a friend of mine uses soap on the wings but i really don't like it because it seems the birds get the soap in their mouth and must taste nasty to them, not to say its a bad idea i just prefer the tape method. and yes blue painters tape is what i prefer to use myself.

Thanks for the reply roller boi, You see my point? You and 916 should buy some bands and band your birds. That way you can tell who the parrents are and what year they were born. Even if you just want some birds for fun in your yard. You can buy expired bands really cheep and still keep track on records the true year. It looks bad with out bands since we all have to be careful of pigeon thieves. Hope you understand my point? Many rollers look alike and with band numbers on adults it will always clear that guy from having stolen birds. But if a guy had one stolen and it looked the same with out a band then there is suspicion for a reason. Thanks Bill C

Look, there are a few good reasons to have banded birds. I think this topic is worthy of another note. It keeps the birds legitamate. Gives you a reocord of the birds age and to keep track of when you have a great little roller come out of a pair and you want to focus on that pair or inbreed. If you lose a bird to weather or over fly if they have a band on them it gives opportunity for the person who finds the bird to return it home. Last year I got a bird in my neighborhood that was from 25 miles away and it got returned to its owner who really wanted that bird back. I'll bet Tony sells old bands cheap as does the NBRC. You can order bands that have a name and phone number on them if you wanted to. Although most people will call you up and say I have a pigoen foot with a band on it. Well the rest of the bird got eaten of course. Anyway It helps to keep the hobby honest and respectable. I mentioned 916 because above you said you got your birds from your brohter in law 916? I thought anyway good luck and think about this to protect yourself and let your friends know that they need to band the birds to help improve trust among roller guys. BIll C

You should do well with that pair. Looks good on the ground. If I were so lucky to score a bag of milo for 6 bucks. Heck, you would think it is cheaper here since Canada (which to my knowledge where we get our milo from) is right up the alley. Nope, here in MN, I'm paying 12 bucks a bag. Wheat, I'm playing 16 bucks a bag.
Geez, no wonder my birds look like snot on crack :)
Good luck!
