How much feed do you guys give your birds that are on Lockdown?

How much feed do you give to your breeders? I have 3 breeding pens with fronts that I built...if I have to leave food and water in there at all times I guess I could just use a small bowl for the feed. But what could I use to hold the water?

A little over a tablespoon per bird should cover the feeding. Hens that are producing may need a little more. Right now I have 66 birds and they clean up 3 1/2 cups real good. In colder months I feed more of a corn mix & it seems to hold them better in cold weather. Your birds know what they eat, don't let them eat you out of house & home because if you give too much they will eventually clean it up too. Kinda like obese people or regular fat boys like me!

Why do some people leave food and water with their breeders 24/7?

I use the open loft method so I only feed in nest during the courtship but as soon as there's eggs, I leave water there & cut back to just a little feed to encourage them to sit.

For watering I use snap on bases and 20 oz. pop bottles, they can be attached to your dowels. I feed free choice when they have young to feed. I use the plastic feeder that also attach. You can buy this stuff from Foy's Pigeon supplies pretty reasonably..

Feed is just enough to hold condition depending on conditions, there is never a set amount, handle the birds and make sure they have some meat on them for the cold.

I personally wouldn't use a feed bowl in the nest boxes,
The birds will tip them over, If you can just go to the nearest pet store and purchase a couple Budgie or Canary dishes, that hang off the wire, take that hangers and bend them around the Dowel

TT you just gave me an idea, I am going to buy some of those big bottles of beer, choke them down, and water my kits with them. I have acouple plastic ltr. bottles now, but glass is much better...
