You will always have one strong squab then the other, Check his crop, Is he getting any food at all maybe half full,
If so i would worry to much, and just keep a eye on him.

Ya bro, the sac that starts from below the beak to about his chest bone, if hes not getting any food at all, then you are going to have to take him in and feed him,
How old is the bird?

I'm just wondering . . .

How many of these weaker birds are strong flyers or rollers, or does a slow start in life make a difference?

Seems to me that you wouldn't want to interfere -- if the feller doesn't make it, maybe he wasn't meant to make it.

You know the law of the jungle "only the strongest survive"?

Which ensures that your birds are the top of the line . . .

Have any of you made note of this?

If it is only 4 days old best to grind some pellets up in the coffee grinder and mix it with a little warm water and use a plastic tipped ssyrringe to feed it.After a week old plain ol grain will suffice.

Or is it that sometimes the birds lay an egg 2 or 3 days later, and then the first chick has a head start and covers up the 2nd chick?

Often the hen will begin to incubate the 1st egg right away and that can cause one chick to be born sooner, yeah.Eggs are laid 2 days apart.

thers is a couple of things you can do,some have been metioned.what also you can do is take this bird and stick it in another nest with a bird that has the same weight as he and put the other chick with the bigger one. so they match up to size, this has worked for me.do not let the bigger bird eat first remove him till the smaller one gets pumped first also if no fosters.

my foundation cock was one of these birds that i syringed for 2 weeks till it was ok.to bad he was lost, boy i miss him waaaa waaaaaa

thanks L.J

Most of my breeders are older now and they know to just hover over the first egg without actually sitting on it. This should come natural to them as they get more mature and experienced. Most of my eggs hatch within 12 to 24 hrs of each other. Sometimes within just a few hours.

If not,you can also pull the first egg and put it in a dry cool place, out of the light, until the second one is laid, then return it. Make sure you turn it a couple of times a day until you put it back in.
