THISROLL.....it all depends on what you want to do with this bird.
I myself don't fly comp.
Iam just a great backyarder....lol. The deeper the better. So, I would prefer a 25 footer or more all the time.

I prefer to have rollers that can vary the depth of the roll at will. Shows a bird that has control of the roll, has the ability to increase the level of performance. I have often observed a team of these birds try to outdo each other...obviously playing and enjoying being Birmingham Rollers.
It is my opinion that this type of roller has more going for it and is of more worth. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Likewise Tony,, The switch is what I look for , They can ither turn it on or off. 5 or 55 ft, at the descretion of the bird...and the ones ive worked on in my program produce the same...

I would guess that there were some other traits that would make the decision for me.
How does it kit? How fast does it return to the kit? Is it a kit leader? What is the style? What is the velocity?
All things equal I'll take the variable depth roller.

I have a Lavender hen that appears to roll the exact same distance every roll. I would guess 30 feet. She rolls fast, with style, and frequent. She is fun to watch BUT 4 out of 5 days she bumps the ground, the top of the kit box, or comes down thru a tree. Some days she stuns herself and sits for five or ten minutes. If she is less than 30 foot above something and rolls, she will not pull out. She never rolls more or less than 30 feet.
I flew her for a while hoping she would gain control while leaving and returning to the kit but she didn’t so I pulled her from the kit.
I guess I would like my birds to be variable in depth.

Hey Huey, Just because your bird rolls 30' everytime doesn't mean that it has no control. If it didn't have any control it would roll 200'.That bird just doesn't know WHEN to roll and WHEN not to! I have had a bird that rolled a max of 5' before and one day it was coming in to land on the kit box and rolled just 5', hit the top of the box and died! A 5' rolldown! I got birds that will rip 60 footers all day long and when they get low they will not roll at all. That to me is Control.

The 5' bird that hit must of had speed to kill it self. Some hit 20'+ and go back to the kit like nothing.

I'm with flipmode here. I don't like birds who start a roll on their way back to the box. I really like good deep rollers but those who vary seem to be less susceptible to BOP attacks and seem to be more aware of things.

lol, Hey Quickspin I've seen birds hit from 50' and fly back to the kit and roll down again and they dont get hurt. I think it's where (back, tail, feet, side or neck) they hit that puts them out for the count.

flipmode, My family are prone to accidents, I had one roll down fronm the top of the kit bot Approxmently 6ft and hit the concreat that was coverd with about a inch of ice... Struck the ground like a bolt of lightning,,, Dead!!! And just a week ago one of my kit birds killed herself comming into trap she was well over a year old.. I had a buddy new to rollers watching her as she was the last on to come in and I had to go get my wife,,, Upon my return my aprentence had the bird in hand with a look on his face you had to see to believe...LOL He said that it attempted to land and rolled several times pulling out withen feet of the roof/ground,,, but the last time it had the wind at it's back locked in and that was that....Ive had birds hit and swell up one eye but this one hit square on the top of it's head and blew out boath eyes and broke its Kneck....Bummer....

I like birds that are 10 -20 30 and 40 footers a mix in a kit so they can have a nucleus to go to.... If they all spin the same depth they will be all over the sky..... ---------- RUDY PAYEN PANCHO VILLA LOFT

I'm with Tony and Rudy on this one ... I had birds that roll 100 feet and get knock out and come back the next day that tells me it was a slow roller,,I also seen one roll 15 and bump and right back up and I'm just waiting for it to cull itself and they land on their back neck and nothing now I had some real fast spinners that when they bump it was their first and last..speed kill them.. ---------- Ralph

To me its all about the control of the roll impulse, not the control of roll depth. And A kit of 10'-20', 30' and 40'footers would be all over the sky, with plenty of out birds..... A kit of solid 25' or 30'footers would smoke such a kit with ease!
