There is good news and bad news. I think you mean Don Penny. He is an older man who I happen to like. He had these rollers for a long time in fact back in the late 70s or 80 he had some of the best Pensom rollers you could find. He got most all his birds from a man who had some Pensom rollers and never crossed anything into them. That is the good news. Now the bad, Don had bred his birds for Duel purpose rollers. He once said he had lost the roll in them ( meaning they did not roll like they used to ) He has some very large rollers with big heads and huge chest mustles. I had a few of them and after flying the young out of some, I had to use them for fosters. They make good fosters. I felt they were just too large a bird and too wide a roller to really do well for me. He does have some good rollers in the mix and I know a guy who saw them in the past and wanted his birds. He lives in the same town now and is trying to bring the roll out in them. So far I would say the guy with Dons birds has roll but nothing like they used to in the older days and he will tell you that. Don is an great guy, He is a honest man who I respect for telling the truth. There are a few guys who are trying to get the birds back to where they were. It will take inbreeding to bring the body size down and many generations I think. I have had 8 different families and I think they were my least favorite ones. But you be the judge and fly them out and see what you think. Like I said in the past they were some impressive birds. Even now you can see roll in his birds, the ones I had were given from Don to a guy named Jon and Jon gave me several because he did not want badges ro checks. So I bred them and flew out the young. Jon did not have a kit box and did nothing with his birds for 4 years now. He is a color breeder who does not fly them out and talks how they roll 30 or 40 feet. I just hope you did not get them from Jon. If you got them from Don Penny they might be worth keeping as he is focusing on flying them for performance again. Bill C

I can tell you this, I did not go on the Sunday fall fly pre-lims because it was the Lords day and I asked Paul. How did Dons birds do and he said, they weren't bad. I asked you saw some rolling and he said yes. He ususally uses the vocabulary they were smokin or something like that but He did not say they were bad at all. ( Well you know what I mean bad! and Baaad! depends on the sentece structure if bad is good bad or bad bad.) Who did you get the birds from? Don had a whole lot of birds a few years ago and had to move them and down sized his breeders. I would also recommend maybe get with a few friends and buy some ruby rollers and split the cost of buying 10 or 12 among two or three guys and compare them. You might save yourself a few years breeding? Bill

mock you? hardly...i actually think scotts asking you a good question. Why try and reinvent the wheel? If its your first serious pair would you really want to use two mediocre birds? heck I wouldnt use two mediocre birds period, esprecially if you've seen them fly as you say. If they were bought sight unseen in the air, I would take my chances, but then again for myself i would have researched long and hard on the family adn flyer..the breeder. I wouldnt have to ask question on who he is. Why not purchase two excellent ideal spinners to use as you're first pair. You stated maybe youll try to get them to spin the way they used to...you're just taking two steps back. You shouldnt have to make them spin the way they used to..if you do you're working with the wrong birds. just my 2 cents, good luck with them. If they make you happy thats all that counts! ---------- Gary

Don Penny is a good friend of mine and lives just a few miles from me. I have seen his birds fly for the past 7 years. They are not my type of bird but then again my birds arent his type either. He does get some deep birds and there is alot of roll in his birds. Is it the type that you want. Only time will tell. Good luck with them and if you wish to ask Don anything about them drop me an E mail and I will get you in touch with him. I will tell you this. He has had basically the same family for close to 60 years. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/
