Anybody use a dog to guard the bird loft? I have a ton of feral housecats around the hood, how hard would it be to train my two border collie dogs to protect the birds? They're extremely high energy dogs and I worry about them looking at the rollers as food! I'm already sick & tired of the cats around here & have wondered how hard it would be to train 2 2year old dogs to protect the birds.

I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but do I need to get any special training for a dog?

I have no doubt that a cat would be dinner near my dogs, I just don't know if I can keep the dogs from feasting on the birds if I were to move them nearer the loft.

Honestly if your dog and IF were locked up in a cage and your didn't fight all, mine would attack because he was raised as a house pet for the first 8 months of his life and thinks he is our size.. lol serious he attacked our toy poodle..

I had a d*mn cat eat one through the wire! My boys , Fatt & Slim are extremely high energy like all border collies, I'm sure that given an opportunity, they could really wipe out a ton of birds. I would like to hear if anybody has successfully trained a dog or two to actually tend the birds.

Yes of course B.. Your can train CATS or DOGS to protect your birds. I know people who have done both. When the kitten or pup is small they put it in or near a nest with squeakers in it.. And the parents beat the deuce out of it, but thats the way they learn. The cats will chase stray cats out of the yard and so will a dog! Or just get a live cat trap.. lol Good luck!

Get a heeler. They are herd dogs and have an instinct to not hurt the birds.

I love heelers, ausies & border collies. My sons picked these two boys out & did a great job. Lots of fun & really great personalities, they just have more energy than any six or seven other dogs combined! They're natural rabbit hunters & as such, I don't know if I could train 'em to tend my birds. They killed a coyote the other day when my boys took them on their walk, they're tough as nails!

Well bruda, as long as the dogs have enough room to run they shouldn't try and eat the birds. I have a border collie and he was very easy to train not to go after the birds. At first all he would do is try and corral them then after a few stiff warnings he stopped that. Tomas pitbulls are another story!

She has never actually killed one. She has gotten a few feathers once or twice. That was three years ago when she was still a puppy. She was just playing with the pigeon.
Once she figured out which birds were which she was good. She evens runs off the doves and sparrows, sometimes anyway. She hasnt figured out yet that chickens dont like to be herded. Thats another story.

You can set a cat trap up high where you dogs won,t get into it. Set it with a can of cat food for bait just cut a hole in the top of the can and empty the trap in the AM. Cat traps are not agents the law. That should take care of your problems with cats.

This Pom has been the best dog ive ever had.His name is Simba and ive had him 2 years. I use him to get birds off the ground, cats out the yard. I have trained this dog to my likings and these dogs were sled dogs before bred down so i take him on 4 to 5 mile runs.He is fearless and confronts any size dog cause he thinks hes a big dog. Hes very smart and a Champion in Heart.O.K he also gets the women for me at the DOG PARK...LMAO

brudahpete.....I will give your some professional advise. Seeing that I have been in the dog training business for over 30 yrs. You have to "very highly trainable dogs". If it were me, I would use a shock coller. You can very easily train them with just a few sessons. You stinulate them with a light shock when the dogs get too close to the birds. Repetition....is the key. The more you stimulate them to stay away from the birds the faster they pick it up...A good coller will have video on How to Use the coller properly. Feel free contact me if any further questions.. I'll be glad to help nout in any way I can....

Also you could get an animal trap to catch the cats.. The kind you would use to catch a raccoon or a possum..

Hey Jammer,

What you described is exactly the way I snake proof my bird dogs. I use a White Oak Snake, non-poisonous, it will vibrate its tail to simulate the sound of a rattler so I get the bonus of snake smell and sound.

For some reason dogs are naturally curious about snakes but after a few sessions with the E collar the dogs will alert that there is a snake close but they won't get within striking distance.

SD......I have found that whatever it is that you are trying to teach a dog, its the "repetition" of the exercise that really makes the difference. No matter what it is that you are working with, I have found that the E-collar does the job. I've used it many many times in the past for various training and will continue to ues it in the future....

Paul, you are so right about the repetition, I've always been a Lab man, and they will train themselves if you don't screw them up! I got turned on to Field Bred English Cockers a few years ago and they are another story, I have to stay on my toes as they will try to train me. They are also much more place oriented than my Labs I have to train in several different locations to keep things interesting.

Ralph.....thanks for the back-up....

SD....To bad I can't get as good aresult with my birds, like I do with my dog training......LOL.
Seriously though, their are many breeds of dogs that will EASILY train their handlers in a heart beat. I see this in all my classes that I train. English Cockers are a very high level energy dog in the field. The excitement level is almost like watching a good kit of rollers in action.....lol. One diffinately has to stay on their toes when working with alot of the field dogs. As far as Labs.....well lets just say in comparison with the English the Labs are overall MORE flat in their working ability and enthusium.... It's all a very interesting and exciting, training dogs or managing your birds. Just stay focused and MOSTLY enjoy them all.....
