First let me give my qualifications. I have raised Rollers since 1933 with a few years off for World War 2 and a few years living in furnished rooms when I first married. And during that time I have watched many Rollers from almost every state in the union and Canada. Some of them in the air and some in coops. But they cant roll in a show coop so we will forget about them.
So here we go into the flying strains of Rollers. Some like them to fly long and not roll at all, some like them to roll like heck for a few minutes and then land, while still others like them to fly an hour or so and still roll deep. Others like them to roll all at once on the turn. that is well and good . I am not telling anyone how to train their Birds or what they should like, but I DO DISAGREE WITH THE FELLOW WHO SAYS THAT EVERY ROLLER THAT IS A TIGHT ROLLER SHOULD SHOW A HOLE IN THE CENTER WHEN IT IS ROLLING.
Of course the larger the hole the looser the roll, that is correct. Also if it is a small hole the Bird is rolling tighter , BUT IF THERE IS NO HOLE THEN THAT BIRD IS ROLLING TIGHTEST AND IT CAN BE DONE.
in fact , I'll bet that many of you fellows that have tight spinners do have such Birds. but you just have not looked close enough. so next time you get your Birds up and they are at the right angle for you to see them perform properly , get some powerful pair of glasses and look for that hole. IF IT IS A GOOD TIGHT ROLL YOU JUST WONT SEE IT.
Now dont get me wrong, all of my Birds do not roll as tight as I want them to , but some of them do and I am trying to breed them to my standard, which is a smaller or NO HOLE. Perhaps some of you might not agree with me , but it can be DONE.

First of all, I would like to say that it was a pleasure to read your post sir! That's one heck of a long time raising these birds and you probably have seen them all. Thanks for setting the bench mark for us youngsters!

hi all rudy the fancier you are talking about was the great bill barrett u.k.he is almost as famous as bill pensom but im afraid bill was wrong as i think most of us who keep rollers have seen the hole at some time .but as george r .says rollers have evolved since the old days.ive wrote about this before ive had rollers almost 40 years .when i was about 15 yrs i had a red flecked cock from ken white .every time he rolled + you seen him from the side he showed the hole .i used to show him off to all my friends as we thought he was fantastic.but as the years went by i realised he was not as good as we all thought.in the end i gave him to a friend as i had started to get birds that where much faster than him .these birds showed no hole at all they showed what we call the blur.and like george r said its what i call evolution.like every thing cars. planes. bikes. athelites.rollers . over the years they all have become faster.i laugh when people say you can not breed rollers that are any faster than the birds in pensoms days.im not that old so i cant say that .but i can comment on the next generation of greats from the u.k.who have won more competitions than pensom ever won the great bob brown + bill barrett people who have done more in the roller world in my eyes than any one else have ever done.but i can tell you now without a shadow of a doubt that there is birds in my area that are faster by far than the birds that bob + bill used to fly.like ive said its called evaloution.

I believe that Bill Pensom attempted to include the hole as being part of the performance standard of the Birmingham Roller for a reason. Could it be that this style element seperates the eilte from the commonplace? It could well be... I have been conflicted over this Hole issue because it is true that the fastest spinning birds are the ones that ball up tightest. Also, probably speed is the most important characteristic... There are a lot of fast birds that ball up, showing no hole. but there are not many that have blur speed and show the hole. I have chosen to try to follow in Pensom's footsteps... To each his own..
