Kenny, don't confuse the meaning of the word "dominant" with ranking or order of dominance in the ranking of color expression. As you know there are three basic/foundation colors of pigeons. They have a set order of dominance....ash red...blue...brown. Indigo is a partial dominant because it is not a naturally occurring base color and is not restricted to the laws of dominance that ash red, blue and brown are. It can co-express with any of them.

Indigo isn't dominant over any other color. Mate an andalusian to a black and breed them for one year. You technically should produce 50% of both. But that isn't the way it works because the percentage is largely based off of mass production numbers. Meaning you would have to raise 100 young for the percentage to work in favor of the 50/50 rule.

In my Wests I will usually have two or three andalusians in my pairings. Some years I will only raise 2-3 or three andalusians. This past year 60 percent of the young raised were andalusian.

Why don't you see more indigos? I guess that depends on what lofts you go to. I would say you would probably have to go to lofts where the fancier has the indigo gene in his flock in order to "see more of them" One of the four birds that make up my Black Elvis family is an andalusian. I might if I'm lucky, produce maybe three andalusians a year. This past year I think I produced three. Two of them are in my A team.

If you want to make a bunch of indigos, just mate two indigos or andalusians together and 25% will be homozygous indigos which no matter what you mate those too, all the young will be indigos.

Brian- Well said. My experience parallels what you have stated. Now I get about 50/50 Andy to Black when I breed an Andy with a Black. This year for the first time I bred Andy to Andy (a father/daughter breeding). I got 80% Andy and 20% Blacks. I use the Crown individual breeding cages so I am 100% sure of the parentage. I was surprised that I didn't get 100% Andy.
