I have seen my share of crested rollers and I will say that they do spin, BUT they dont hold the spin for very long , I talked to a friend Mike Maravia and he said that the Crest will hold the roll for a month at the most , then they will rolldown ( SPLAT ).

I guess any bird that has Roller in it can Spin but can the Bird LAST for years with the ability to control the Spin , I DONT THINK SO..

anyway If a person likes breeding for Crest that there Choice, but I wont hold my Breath waiting to see a whole kit of crest performing and lasting for a Season or two I dont think that can happen .

but to those that are trying to breed such birds, I wish you all the luck in the World because breeding GOOD Rollers is hard enough but trying to breed rollers with Odditys is even harder.

Hey George
Mike Maraviov is a friend of mine, like you are.
Mike is a strait forword guy,he has never denide that he made his crest, yeas he crossed a russian tumbler to get his crest, and yea i got a cock from him to cross with my crest, the outcome was poor,he put too much roll in his creation and they do rolldown early.
I got rid of his becouse they did roll down for me too.
I continued with the one i got from that old man Jerrie, and the one i got from Henry, those have produced real good and some not so good like any pair whould.
I have a hen the has flown for 2 W/C pre,2 F/F pre, twice bred and reintroduced to the kit to be as good as it was the year before,i bet we both have some birds that after a seosson of breeding they rolldown.I could pull this hen and in one week she whould blow your minde.
I still have a long way to go,i still get rolldowns, but the few that are not ,they are some fast deep birds.
I keped one offspring from the Maraviov stuff, and let me tell you i mate that bird to anything and the young spinn there asss off.
This spring im hopping to get a hole kit up.

If a roller is a spinner and bred right it will spin and not roll down. if A crested is bred right it will not roll down depend on the person who breeds it.The birds in the cage look a type of high flyer mixed with rollers.Stan Arnold has crested rollers and they spin very well and deep.He would fly them for years and would not get roll downs.

Yes Stan Arnold has some pretty good crested rollers, but also keep in mind he raises 300 young a year. He used to fly in the World Fly and when I judged them, out of 20 birds, 1 each time I would call a fast spinning pigeon, the rest just average rollers.
Crests are like muffed, it depends how much time & patience you have.
I have muffed birds back to Skidmore stuff, from Bob Brown & Bill Barrett. They are as good as anything I have ever seen.

The blue chk on top was the one i got from Mike Maraviov.
He did produce too many rolldowns, ask Spanky ,if one of the fastes spinning birds he ever saw,was a daughter of that chk.

That is the reason after all of these years there are only two people I would use a bird from if I needed one. The birds today have all kinds of stuff in there and you might end up with a pink one, scoop tail and a Jacobin head. It may perform well but it is just not my thing. Even some of the guys who I thought were strict are now loose as to what they bring in. Maybe I am old fashion.

LaRon you are not old fashioned you just know what you like. I like a bird that has the heat and can show it off.

I also love the look of different things and just a coop of all the same stuff is just a bit to limiting for me. Yes you can have a flock of hot performers that are all red checks or blue bars or black checks oh sorry for mentioning all that color LOL I just prefer a kit of birds that looks nice when it is flying around the coop as when its spinning up in the clouds.

Like I said if it spins it has a home.

Anytime you move away from the breed to make them special (fancy colors or crests) you are not helping the breed at all you are helping polute it and you are actually destroying it. But to each his own, you buy the feed right. (roll fast or not) does not mean a thing!

The Bigger the Dream the Bigger the Leap

For what it is worth..I have a good friend who has bred both crest and ice into his rollers. It has taken him some time to breed these factors into his birds. They roll just like the rest of his birds. He bred the characteristic in and then culled hard. I have a hen ice I got from him, she is not for sale. I will post her picture in the A.M. she is beautiful and a true spinner...

Hector thanks for the photos, I am excited to see them spin.

Mike I look forward to seeing photos of the ice project. I have seen some ice birds around here but they still need some work on the spin. I did see one that had no problem breaking the 20' mark but the speed was lacking.

Anyone working on powder blue?

Heated What is so heated about my post.

I just said there not birmingham rollers just like other colors birds and gave them a name didnt comment about there spin or there ability to do so they are crossbreds and thats a fact.

It really dont matter to me as long as a person is happy with his own stock in his yardthen i am happy for them .People knock my andalusians but i dont care there mongrels they say !!!
Here at spincity loft there American Color Roller Pigeons (ACRP)
And I luv them and that all that matters

ACRP first time I heard that I have heard of american rollers but they are rollers only by name. They have turned into a show only breed. Just like the american flying tumbler. Tumblers only by name.

World class feather puffs "WCFP" would be a better name for both of those breeds.

Anyway to each his own. I would rather have people raising what they like then not be in the hobby at all.

For me though it has got to fly and spin, or it will be in the soup not in the coop.

Im not worried about what anyone thinks about the crest,or andelusians,(wich i have a few),
Half of the people that are saying there crosses, havent even ever flown in competition or havent flown a kit better than mine, the half that have,i respect there opinion.

My family has raised Serbian Highflyers for some 100 + years as I am from Bosnia. The pictures of birds that I have seen on Hector Coyas site look nothing like them. They have no any characteristics to the Serbian Highflyer (body,eye,beak,....). Now the pictures dont show everything, but that is my opinion ....

Genetically speaking, the fact that a bird has a crest has nothing to do with how it rolls. By this I mean that the genes for crest are inherited independently from those that produce roll. This, is according to one of the basic rules of genetics, the Law of Independent Assortment.
If birds having crests have good or bad roller characteristics it is because of other genes...not the crest gene. So it could be that some of these birds are tha result of crosses or poor roller breeding. But the crests themselves have nothing to do with roll.

This coming Monday, I'll take delivery of some bellnecks from Tom Monson. His dad bred this line of roller over many years. You will not find two more respected roller men in the entire country. Mr. Monson was an experimentor and thus we have the bellneck. I beleive he left a great mark on the breed with this strain of bird even though the roll was affected by his dedication to color.

To all who are working on whatever genetics, more power to you. You may well come up with a real firecracker of a bird. Just remember, if it doesn't please you, go back to square one! I'm sure that the original Birminghams were created through this same meathod of trial & error. Good luck & God speed!
