you think BOBBY CHACON, or BAZOOKA LIMON ,LUPE PINTOR,CARLOS ZARATE, SALVADOR SANCHEZ, DANNY "LIL RED" LOPEZ, ETC. would have let them stop the fight ?
Thats why Oscar will never be considerd a true Mexican warrior.
My opinion

George,
Now why would you say something ridicules like that?
Would you say that JC Chavez (The Mexican Icon) is not a true warrior? He quit on the stool against Oscar, so does that not make him a true Mexican warrior?
Oscar has fought the best and I consider him one of the best of all times. Why would he continue to fight knowing that he doesn't have it anymore. Should he have kept fighting like Chacon, Pintor, Zarate and get knocked out like they all did when they were in the sport too long?
For those who don't really understand boxing, this is just the way it works, Top fighters have their time at the top, then the new younger guys take that spot. Would someone say that Larry Holmes is a much better fighter than Ali? Larry did beat the crap out of Ali right? How about Sugar Ray vs Terry Norris? Or Chavez vs. Kostya Tszu? or... the list goes on and on.
Oscar had a great career, but it’s time to hang up the gloves...

Efren
Was he to old when he quit against Hopkins ?
anyway I always said Oscar was a great promoter and he still is.
I guess the days of old when boxers fought with all the heart they could muster have been gone a long time ago.
I guess Oscar will always be this generations Boxing great but to another generation who saw the old true warriors who left it all in the Ring he could be just a good fighter but not a great fighter.

Over matched and over sized against Hopkins.
I'm a boxing fan period all generations, my dad has all the tapes and I've watched them all, Chacon, Sanchez, Zarate, Pinto, Cuevas...you name it and am a big fan of those fighters especially Chavez and Sanchez. I grew up watching boxing and fighting as an Armature and would have continued if it wasn’t for hand injuries. I also was a boxing coach for Compton Sheriffs YAL. So not just a fan of boxers in my era.
The difference now is that the fighters are much smarter than they were in your days. Like not letting their pride get them knocked out when there is no chance in hell to continue fighting.
By your reasoning, a fighter needs to get knocked out to be considered great...lol Must be a lot more greats out there than I thought...lol

Oh and by the way, Mosley real close fights and plus Mosley was on steroids when he fought Oscar in 03, controversy decisions both times, Trinidad and Mayweather were given gifts as Oscar beat them both.

I'm not saying that quiting is a sign of great Champions, just saying that it makes no sense in getting knocked out as you stated when your done.
Chavez and Delahoya are Great Champions because of the great fights they had. Just because they quit in the corner when they were getting beating doesn't take that away.

I remember those fights, Chavez was still in the fight, he was down on the score cards but wasn't getting his a** handed to him, and it was just a matter of time that he caught Taylor.
Forman was getting beat but everyone knew that Moorer had no chin and that Forman had a big punch, so he still had a chance.
There were lots of great fight like that, but in todays fight were Delahoya had nothing to answer or return there was no chance in a comeback, like there was no chance when Chavez quit against Oscar.
How about all the other fights were the old timer was getting his a** handed to him and got knocked out...far too many of those to mention...lol

I still remember Roberto Duran and Davey Moore and Roberto Duran and Iran Barkley , I think Duran was already close to forty years old when he whipped those guys .
Bernard Hopkins just upset Kelly Pavlik and he is in his 40's so I guess some dudes just last longer then others.

Do you remember Duran and William Joppy? How about Hopkins and Taylor? Different styles make different fights/results, so just cuz Oscar got killed today, doesn't mean he can't beat anyone else. ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS http://lopezloft22.bravehost.com/

The fighters today ain't nothing like yesterday fighters -you want my belt you have to knock me out for it..they will lose but but go down fighting ..Efren is right today fighters are smarter they know when to walk away or they can't do it..but I always love the fighter with the heart and if I'm going to quit it better be because i can't lift my arms up any more..I aLways love the fighter that is losing but kept coming back for more. Game to the bone... Ralph

Efren - They are much smarter and they are also aware of the medical injuries (long term and short)and have awesome advice now. Stop before you will not be able to enjoy the money years later because of all sorts of medical problems.
However - He did get his culo kicked.

Win or lose Oscar is still the Man, Im not one to bash because he loses, He's proven himself and won his titles, Tell me when he was winning where you guys cheering for him(previous fights)ever?
The reason i ask is because when i flew down for the Oscar Vargas fight, I think My buddy and I where the only two cheering for him, everyone else was chanting V A R G A S, till about the 4-5 round, then the whole stadium turned because of a left hook, and the Vargas fans became Oscar fans,

Laron, this is what I mean by a smarter fighter. Where are those older fighters now? Are they enjoying all of the money they made? Most have serious health problems and broke and continued to fight past their prime.
That was a good fight Tony, Oscar vs Vargas. I met them both when I was in the fight scene. We used to go and train with Oscar when he was starting his pro carrier.
There a good amount of younger prospects out there, can't wait what the next generation of fighters have to bring.

I dont remember Ike Quartey beating anyone of great significance.
vargas was a good fighter but was never the same after the Trinidad fight.

Ike Quartey was a top fighter, but ran into Vargas and Oscar so that’s why he didn't do much after. Quartey did have another big fight against Jose Luis Lopez.
Vargas was beating everyone until he ran into Trinidad’s left hook, (I think he jump into that fight a bit early and over confident). Vargas biggest victory was against Winky Wright not Quartey. Look up Wrights victories and tell me that he is a no one.
Almost all of Oscars fights were against the best, and on his losses the decisions were controversy.

Regardless on any fight, I will respect all fighters, Its not that easy getting in a ring and going round after round, I grew up in this sport since i was 8, been in the ring, fought my fights, and respected them all,and never dogged anyone of them And when you think your on top of your game, there will be that one, that'll just be a little tougher, And when you get someone who comes along and hates on a fighter(not saying anyone here, just in general), Ill i have to say to them is, Lets see you get in there and do better, The Greats have there days, and they all lose in the end, Just like Oscar, And he is/was a Great.
