Thank You! Quite interesting to hear what it was like years ago. I can just imagine myself a boy in that setting with so many pigeons about. Awesome!

Jim,
This is a really great article..!! And you did a really good job at posting it. I have tried to do the same thing before, and it didn't turn out as well as yours.
I enjoyed hearing about how these rollermen acquired their birds... especially Pensom... Buying a whole kit to get one bird... etc.
So it seems that Mr White had started to write a book...!! So he must have had his writings assembled somewhere... It would be fantastic if someone could get them and publish them somehow. It would be a tribute to a great rollerman, and would be something that I am sure that he wanted to do, but somehow never got completed. The pause in the interview before he mentioned those plans shows that....
Please, if someone can find those writings, they need to be shared.

Hi everybody,

You guys give me goose pimples. (In South Africa there is a lot of people that still fly K.White's birds).
John I scanned the doc as a JPeg and posted it as you would post a picture. The old man on the farm gave me all the writing between K.White and K.Payne and Penson. They use to have discussions in a magazine under the topic roller ramblings. I had these articles retyped as a soft copy if you would like me to post some of it.

hi all
PAUL G i know like i do how much you like to hear about the past in the roller game. like my mate shadow says there should be a lot more written down past + present.the article jim as posted is out of the aerc journal i was telling you about.ive been looking through some of them today.dont know if you contacted our secretary about them i put her adress up on a previous page. but 1 i think you would be very intrested in is the 2002 VOL 11. BARRY SHACKELTON put that 1 together.theres some real good reading in it about the older fanciers.

Hi John W,
You have stimulated a lot of interest I believe.
I did contact Donna Chantry... She sent me this response:

Thanks for your interest in the AERC journals.
The first journal was produced in 1991 and there have been 17 journals in total been made to date.
I only have copies of the books from 2004 onwards, although I have managed to borrow all back copies and will be having them reproduced over the next few years until a full set is available.

The 2004 journal celebrated the 40th anniversary of the AERC which was formed in 1964. That journal along with the 2005-2007 was edited by Graham Dexter who was at the time our journal secretary.

The costs of the journals are as follows

2004 £5.00
2005-2008 £3.00 each

I will found out the cost of post and package on Monday 8th Dec and will let you all know straight away.

Regards Donna Chantry

You said that postage is about the same as the cost of an issue. I would certainly like to get the issue you mention and others that have reading about the breeders of old.
Thanks a lot,
Paul G

That is an awesome article. It brings perspective and historical insights. It may even hint what place a person has in history. It seems that Pensom already had the gift of writing and perhaps like a promoter. Nice.

With all due respect, I am questioning the authenticity of the article above. It does not in any way sound like a Pensom writing style that I became accustomed to. He has a unique way of writing English that is different form the style of the article above.

Hey Jay, now that you mention it, reads to me like the writing style of K.D.Spurling? Hmm, wonder where this will go?

Hey Jim, thanks for posting these articles. To help place things in context for the rest of us, do you have enough information on them to be able to place a publication date and the publication they first appeared in?

This could go a long way toward shutting up any argument about authenticity. Yes?

hi all
jim i personaly agree with everything pensom said in that last post apart from the very last bit about early rollers not making it over the long term .as over a lot of years i have proved it by stocking at least 2 y/bs each year.but everything he said in that article as happened to me.and he wrote that in the 60/s.

Again thanks for posting it makes for very informative reading, one query I have is regards the young birds, and the opinions offered as to their "deterioration" by August, whatever the reason, and my own is the onset of the casting of the last flights, why are then Young Bird competitions/flies held at around this time, but again its an excellent read, for any fancier.
