It appears that only about 50 votes have been cast so far by the flyers in this year's competition in the vote to change the name our competition. I would like to encourage all those who flew, to take a moment and send in your ballot by December 15. We need to give the name of this competition the prestige that it deserves in its name. Whether you agree on changing the name or not, at least send in your vote so that apathy does not rule the day. Thanks, Cliff

Unles they change the fly dates to help out the West coast from the BOP,attacs, the name will not matter. I for one have flown the last F/F.to have the finals in November is just feeding the Falcons . I hope we get the California State fly in June or July, If that gets going The NBRC will lose alot og members. I know most of my Club members will agree, this was our last F/F. Hector Coya-SGVS

Hey Cliff, how long has the vote been going on now, a few weeks? 50 votes? Where are all the people who were clamoring for a new name and why haven't they voted?
I can't believe that out of a competition that had hundreds of flyers this year, only 50 votes? I am still trying to get my mind around that one. ;-( For the name change to win out, how many votes must be in favor of it, like 26 out of 50 or a super majority?
Does that mean that maybe 26 people will decide for a group of 2 to 3 thousand on the name change? I hope more flyers vote than what has currently been reported...Maybe it's just too early in the process to know anything, but can you tell us if you have any sense as to which way it will go?
Thanks for the update. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Tony, In the past we have had many major issues voted on and decided with less than 100 votes cast. Take it one step farther and 18-20 RDs can make decisions for 2000 NBRC members. Take the WC for instance, where a few dozen RDs can change the fly rules affecting each and every flyer world wide, without any flyer vote whatsoever. I have seen RDs will wait till the last minute to send in regional fly information. Many of the flyers are just not interested in being involved in the decision-making process, too many in fact. Why don't all the NBRC members take part in the competitions? Why doesn't each flyer vote when possible? Why don't the 100% of RDs participate in the on-line EC discussions? Why have the last three elected NBRC VP's failed to fullfill there obligations? I have few answers for you......but enough of us DO care enough to vote to keep our hobby and its organizations plodding along. If I had to make a guess, I think voter apathy would be it, the heat of the debate has passed and men are hunkering down for winter, getting ready for Christmas, etc.....our busy life-styles......But first and foremost... this is a hobby; a pleasure for most of us. Few wish to make work out of a hobby. If we have flyers who wish to change the timing of the fly, first we must stop naming the fly for a season. That shouldn't be too hard to understand. It is up to the flyers to make the choice. If every flyer who is tired of feeding the hawks voted, then maybe we could address that problem. I have voted...... HAVE YOU? Cliff

Hey Cliff, yeah, voter apathy is probably more like it, the second thing is only those who flew in the last fly are allowed to vote, right? So that leaves me and allot of others out of the voting.
Do you know roughly how many flew this past Fall Fly? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Tony, We had a record number of kits entered this year for our national championship......around 626 kits. That includes 11-bird and 20-bird kits; some flyers entered two kits, so the actual number of flyers is less than the total number of kits. But I haven't actually calculated the total number of flyers as of yet.
I'm surprised you didn't fly, Tony. Why not? Cliff

Thanks Cliff, interesting, I was thinking how the 80/20 Rule might be showing itself in the voting. Based on the rough number you gave above, I would say the principle is being demonstrated very well in the current voting.
Cliff as for not flying, I really don't feel good about risking my stock to BOP during the Fall when they seem to be everywhere around here.
My sense has always been to limit potential losses to my investment of time and effort. As you know, when training our birds for competition, it requires the birds to fly everyday, once they start getting picked off by BOP, the pressure to participate and keep the training going, can literally decimate an entire kit of fine rollers.
I like winning as much as the next guy, but I am not going to fly them into a slaughter. I love my birds too much for that. I got into rollers for the love of the breed, not for the love of competition. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Understandable, Tony. In 2009, your region will be able to fly your regionals anytime during the year that it wants...and we will start the finals much ealier. We should have included an option to change the name of the Fall Fly to the Spring Fly or the Summer Fly or the All-Seasons Fly, for some guys, I guess! LOL! Meanwhile, you might want to get with your RD to discuss when the best time of year is safest and best weather-wise, to compete with your best birds. This should make it interesting. I'll have a more formal announcement coming out in the Bulletin soon. Cliff

Hey Cliff, that sounds good! So Nick Siders will be the one in charge? Or is something else being planned? The reason I say that is I know I recently voted to divide our region into something more manageable as far as not being so spread out.
If this is the case, I am sure Nick is working hard at getting things figured out. Our region will probably be hearing form him soon I imagine. Thanks Cliff! ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

We haven't seen anything, yet, from NIck on the EC. All he needs is a list of flyers for the new region and the name of a volunteer for RD. We split several regions into more manageable geographical areas in 2008. I do not expect any problems with it. Cliff

...."when our National organization holds it's only major national fly and it's name is not indicative of the prestige that should accompany it because it is mis-named and does not live up to the herculean effort it takes to win it, or it has outgrown it's former name merely from the number of participants or the time period that the regionals to finals encompass, that's enough to change it for me" .... -posted by a roller man on another site....pretty much says it all!! Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been reciving e-mail votes personally from flyers who want to vote for the name change. These votes are not valid and will not be counted, unfortunately. You must cast your ballot by clipping it from one of the last two Bulletins, checking the appropriate box, and mailing it to Bob Berggren by Monday the 15th. Thanks for your interest in this issue, and for your desire to contribute...now jump on it! Cliff

It's official...the vote is in and the members have voted in favor of changing the name of the competition to the NBRC National Championship Fly. My hat's off to those members who took an active part in the NBRC decision-making process; to Clay Hoyle for not letting it rest; to Gregg Sale for taking the bull by the horns and making something happen via the petition, and to everyone who took part in any way-whether it was expressing your opinion on the internet; to your friends and colleagues in the sport on the phone and at the flies; by stepping up and signing the petition at the risk of being branded a trouble-maker; or in taking the time to cast a vote (no matter how you voted). Some members and officers choose to denigrate the value of internet lists in fascilitating communication between club-members. However, as we can see, the discussions that we have as members and flyers on these lists CAN have an impact on the directions that we take as an organization, particularly if we act in one accord. The name of the fly may be a small thing to some, but it represents what is possible when we act together as a group. Congratulations men. I think the name now represents the true status of our NBRC competition. What a nice Christmas present! Cliff
