I think what they were using as show rollers back in the day was the same bird they used for flying. Gradually, the serious show guys developed there own breed, much larger and very much NOT the same bird we fly today. Today if you want to show there is a totally different class for the performing ,flying roller, and the "show roller". A flying roller wouldn`t even place in a show roller catagory. This is just my take from what I`ve seen and read. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Guys are still breeding them. Many guys don't want to admit it but they are. Bred for the show more so than for the air in my opinion.

WCFP World Class Feather Puff is what a show roller is it is a roller only by name.
The Dual Purpose Rollers were just like Donny said flying rollers that you would also show.
Joe Stayer has a group he calls dual purpose wich is a bird that can be flown from a mobile loft as well as a kit box.
I see lots of show rollers around here and they have a large following. There is one guy that is breeding the old evertson line of pensoms that he still flies I have seen some of his birds do some nice spins but wow they are tiny birds just with the show roller composition. He wins the smaller shows but the big shows go to the big birds.
Again to each his/ her own, ---------- David Curneal

Andrew, The dual purpose label is for a bird that is bread for showing and flying. NOT a flying bird that is shown. The flying birds that were shown started to get beat by show only birds, so they were bread for what won in the show ring not what was best in the air.
You can't breed to win in both places. As soon as you start to pick you breeders for any reason but performance the performance suffers.
Have fun with them Keith Maxwell

There should not be any dual purpose rollers, you bred them to fly or to show, your choice. My input is when you hire a judge for a show for flying birds, all he should have to look at is birds in flying shape. You may have to give them a bath, but there should feel like they have been flown hard. He may not be able to judge the mental qualities of the bird, but feather condition and quality can tell him a lot. It shouldnt be a pretty bird contest. The real test is in the air, a flyer should be on his honor to bring his best spinners to the "SHOW" to show the type of birds he is breeding, win lose or draw. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay
