I get up and go out the door this morning and notice my kit light is off. So I go in there and the heat bulb is shattered everywhere. Some of the glass on the birds. (They are fine) So I get home 4 hours later and clean everything up (got every single piece in there) and put birds back in with new wood chips, new food dish, and new waterer. I cleaned it in -20 F.. And then again 20 minutes ago I am going out to feed them and its off again. I went in there in the pitch dark and just slowly reached for the bulb and looked at it to see how it was broken and a huge flame shot from it and then burnt out. Just about crapped my pants.. lol I can not heat now in a non-insulated shed because the bulb keeps just shattering. So I added the 13 into my heated open loft already holding 36 birds. Now there are 49 birds overall. It is well insulated and heated with two bulbs usually at 70 F.. The heated section in which they are in is 8x8 and well ventilated. With a ventilator fan sucking the junk out through a small window. Is it ok if there are this many birds in there? How long do I have to build a new loft quickly that is insulated? In other words, how long can I leave them in there before they will start getting sick if they even do? Oh yes this is a kit by the way that the bulb keeps breaking in.. 4x4x6 ft. high..

Could it be getting any water drops on the bulb? As hot as that bulb gets it will shatter if even a drip hits it!

Could your birds be flying into it? Maybe you could build a little wire basket around it!

Having that many birds together will be fine, I f you start seeing chaos, then make sure each bird has the choice of its own perch,
The bulb breaking i would say its from the cold wind, if you can cover the bulb with a shield or anything that will keep the wind hitting it directly then it will be fine also,
Look at it this way all the lights outside you house last through out the winter and not bust because of the shielding around it, just my thoughts

hi andy its rick why are you heating your coup your going to make them sick from the temp variations just keep an eye on the birds you just put in there they are probably not used to the temp difference believe me the temp wont hurt them i dont heat nothing in the winter & my coups are just plywood & 2x4 walls as long as they arent getting any drafts they will be just fine just use your lights in the daytime not heat bulbs (or are you trying to breed right now) give it a try next year but dont do it this year your birds are already climatized or you can ship your birds to me and ill watch them for you ha ha ha let me know
thanks rick

the birds are flying in to the bulb be cause they feel the heat coming from it, if i were in -20 degree i would land on that bulb and stay there all day heck.lol

kopetsa.... You might want to check the bulbs..See what the temp rating is. If it is too cold, below the bulb rating, the bulbs will EXPLODE due to extreem cold temps..
