Cleaned my new ind cages last weekend and since they weren't that dirty, I didn't wear a mask! Wow, I have a serious sore throat and my lungs hurt! Went to the urgent care yesterday, but after an hr and a half of waiting, I left. Thought I'd rather die at home! LOL Started on some zyrtec and ACV and water and its starting to get better!

I won't make that mistake again! Wear a mask!

That's a good reminder . . . hope you get well fast and don't have any long-lasting effects. Sounds serious! Thanks, Val.

Indoor lofts are mighty dusty. I decided that I wouldn't do a fully enclosed loft again just for that reason. I visited Showlow's loft a while back & saw how it's done! He has a tamped gravel floor in all of his lofts they were absolutely dust free. I'm going to impliment this same type of floor in my new loft. We only have just a week or so of extremely cold weather (0-15 degrees). I'm not going to breed in the winter any more so I won't need to enclose anymore.

I`ll have to keep this in mind more now too. I always wear a mask when cleaning the loft, but also had someone nagging me to wear it. I`ll have to nag myself now.LOL

I remember I got real sick after cleaning the loft in early 2008 , I still might get rid of my breeders and just buy a kit or two to fly each spring.

question...
is the danger in the doo dust or is it in the feather dust?

It could be a pigeon lung disease. Be careful. Some people are allergic to pigeon dust (both on the doo and feather). I think there is antigen there that some people react to causing some respiratory allergy symptoms. It can damage lungs. I think other birds like parakeets can give the same reaction.

Val,
Long sleeve coveralls, mask, hat for cleaning up.Three years ago, pnuemonia put me down hard.I'm convinced pigeon dust aggrivated it to that point.Sometimes its hard to put this point out there, but loft design and of course keeping the numbers of pigeons as low as possible might benefit you in the longrun.

Val,everytime I have cut back for one reason or another,I seen the health of the birds benefit and that kind of sickness be kept at bay.We get caught up in life and then one day,BOOM,it's theres for you to deal with.

If you ever get a chance,I think it was in one of Tom Hatchers books, look at James Turners breeding loft.It was supported by metal poles and the whole bottom was open for about three feet around the whole enclosure. You can tell just by looking at the loft the idea behind the design was to carry the dust away immediately, just an example,TAKE CARE.....Aloha,Todd

I Hope you get to feeling better Val. Here lately i've finally started wearing a mask when cleaning the loft. I think it has helped but I've had this cold or it could be an allergy that I haven't been able to get rid off. Jim Bowen
