Hi Fontanabound! There are lots and lots of large breed dogs in Southern California shelters that are in desperate need of a good home. Go to this link: http://www.petfinder.com/ and fill in the search fields on the left .. you'll be surprised at what you find. There will be an adoption fee, but it will be much less than purchasing a dog at a pet store .. probably a bit more than buying at a swap meet or flea market, but you have a better chance of getting a healthy and well socialized dog from the shelter than from a swap or flea market, IMO.
Crazyrider is right about the breed and links he has posted. There is a livestock guardian dog rescue here in So Cal. If you are interested, let me know, and I will get you the info if I can. I have friends in Norco that adopted a Great Pyrenees named Gabriel .. he is HUGE and such a great dog for guarding the birds and animals .. truly a gentle giant. You won't find a good LGD (livestock guardian dog) cheap from a breeder, but you might get lucky and get one from a rescue at a good adoption fee.
Get a mutt, seriously. Half breed dogs are some of the best guard dogs there are. Some of the best dogs I've seen are just "dogs". They aren't predisposed by the tangled web of selective breeding.
Thanks TAWhatley , I need not info, I have got 3 dogs : two Border C. and a Bergamasco Shepard http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bergamasco.htm they're enough !
Gotcha, Crazyrider! I was actually posting that to Fontanabound in case he wanted to go looking for an LGD.
To the other posters .. yes .. mutts are great but you have to train them or they will be killing your birds and other animals. I have 4 dogs that are all rescues .. two mutts and two purebred but still rescues .. the mutts are my big dogs, and I had to really work with them to be guard dogs and protectors of my birds and other animals. Their natural instict was to kill anything small that moved quickly.
well guys i have my favorites and i want a dog who can keep up wit me also. i like rotties, the cane corso mastiff, american bulldogs, mini pins, dobermans, and pitts. also shelters are good for finding dogs but they wont let the dog go if its not neutered/spayed. and that sucks cant have a dog that cant reproduce if i wanted to. so i think shelters are out of the question.

These belong to a guy I work with and they just had some pups. The male is over 140lbs.Are they big enough for you? The small picture is the pair that just had pups.
I took a look in the local pound... They have more pit bulls than you can shake a stick at..!! Some mean ones too..!! Maybe if you're the Dog Whisperer that might work for you... Paul G

Like I said they aren't mine, they belong to a guy I work with but I'll get the contact info. for you. I don't know a lot about the dogs other than he said he had very large pitts that had some pups. I have a picture of another litter that he had. I'll post for you. I also have a buddy Rod Fomby whos dog just had a litter. They are pitts as well just not as large as the other ones but the a big dogs.
If you can find one, try a Kuvasz, it is a Great Pyrenees with an attitude. Once these dogs take possession of a space, animal or human, they will not allow anything to get between them their possessions. What ever your choice check with your Insurance, some breeds are disallowed by your Home-owners policy. ---------- "Semper Fi" SD
