Ok, I guess its time to lock `em up for a while. I`ve been able to fly 3 or 4 times a week so far this winter. Today I let them out about 2 pm and had a cooper on them at about 30 seconds in the air. He had to be close. I even walked around to try to check the area before I released them. I think he was sitting across the field in some low scrub trees.
Anyways, he managed to get a nice red and white young Jaconnette. 10 days from a year old. Looks like I`m done for a while. I`d hoped to keep this kit in the air for the winter and have `em smoking by spring.

I had a baldheadeagle move in and since then I have not seen any small hawks. Iguess an Eagle could get them though to.

The other morn I was working in my garage and I looked out at my pigeon coop as my rollers were out in the fly pen and have been locked down for a month.When I thought I saw a couple feathers float past my window. At first I thought it was snow flakes blowing off the roof.But the more I watched the more feathers I saw comming down.I looked up above the window and there was a coop eating a blue jay, not ten feet from my window.I know he must sit there and watch my pigeons also.

Hawks use stealth and ambush to get their prey. I, too, looks around the area before a fly, but like you experienced, hawks just come from nowhere. Sorry for your loss.

Hey you guys,
One way that i've found to help me out is to not only look around for hawks. Hawks are hard to find in trees. They can blend in very good, even when the leaves are off the trees they're still hard to discover. What i usually do is just walk around the trees nearest to my area and i clap as loud as i can. Usually it'll make em jump and you'll see em move. And if all looks well, next thing is listening to the birds around. I've found clapping one of the most powerful resistance of hawks when they are on the attack and when they are preparing for an attack. Falcons can also be distracted when they are after your birds in the air just by clapping. But be prepared to use a lot of energy watching them in the air and chasing them on the ground..LOL.

I have 2 pieces of 2x4 about 12" long setting on my kitbox. I use them to slap together! They make a very loud clap sound. Even scares me sometimes!!!
I don't do this to harass or discourage BOPs from their natural habits, of course! I just like to enjoy the sound of it for myself!!!

I have a large tree near my pigeon coop and mister cooper likes to sit in it and look for lunch. Next weekend Iam having it taken down.Also I have several crows in the area and they don't like the hawks at all. I have seen them chase the hawk away from the area.

Hey Val, back in the day at swim meets, the heats were started as you describe, only the lumber was 1x6 and hinged at one end. They would't use starter pistols cause us "Coonasses" would shoot back! LOL
These do make quite a noise though.

Theres some good advise as far as discouraging them from the area with sound. But I`m still taking the safe road and will keep them undercover for a while. Maybe a a couple weeks I`ll start thinking about flying them again,.. I`ve learned the hard way and spent the last few years feeding BOPs or flying them off due to BOPs, Then I dont have much to show for my years work come the following spring. Not this year. I`m gonna have yearlings to fly this spring. That is if the dang snow aint up to my butt by then.

Good choice Butch beside one might have a hearing problem.
I feel proud of myself haven't fly for about 2 month.but I
tell you one thing I do feel a little explosive lately.these birds are my therapy and when they are free flying I go and fly with them..spiritually.. ----------

TONY WHAT I MENT WOZ LETIN ROCKETS OF WHILE THE BIRDS AM FLYIN. THIS WORKS4ME AND A COUPLE OF LADS OVER THIS WAY. DNT KNOCK IT TILL YA TRY IT. SAME AGAIN THE LOUD BANG SENDS THE BOP OF THE OTHER WAY. INRETURN SAVIN THE KIT? IM OPEN2 ANY THIN YOU MITE SAY WHICH WOULD HELP ME. BUT LIKE I DID SAY ON ONE OF MY POSTS IV KEPT BOP YEARS AGO AND A MATE OF MINE STILL DUZ. SO I KNOW WHAT MAKES EM TICK AND THE WAY THEY HUNT. AND IF YA GOT YA BIRDS WALKIN THE YARD. AND A CAT WENT RUNNIN AT EM . YA WOULDNT JUST STAND THERE AND LET IT TAKE 1. I Know what you mean by the birds being your therapy Ralph. I have friends who get off work and they need a 12 pack for their therapy..LOL
I always said my birds are my 12 pack.

Maybe he means if you clapped those woods in some form of rhythmic sequence you can let the cooper dance and go home.It is like clap, clap, clap,...pause, clap, clap, clap, add whistle beat, you get the idea. LOL! You know you get it right when your neighbor's look you funny!

Rod, A few years ago all my neighbors looked at me funny when they seen me in the yard staring up in the sky. Now they all understand and think its cool. A couple months ago one neighbor, who takes care of his elderly grandmother who lives up the road, He told me she sits in the backyard in the summer just to watch my birds every chance she gets. He said shes just amazed by them...LOL
