Ok so my Indian Fantails are now mated together. Can I put them in an open loft with the rollers to breed right now or will they cross.. I though birds will only incubate eggs that that know they fertilized. In some case when people have gotten junky crosses, it was because they probably didn't see each bird incubate the eggs.. I am in in the morning, afternoon, night, so I will see which birds are incubating the egg. My question, if both Indian Fantail parents are incubating the eggs, are the for sure the parents. I have never had a cross before.. When I used to breed rollers open loft like a million years ago.. ;)

It goes for the same for every other paired bird in a open loft, Are they really the true parents? we will always know who the mother is, Now if the fantails have cross breed it wont be hard to tell, Dont stress and just place them in there, U have your homers in there to dnt u?, In your case i wouldnt worry to much.

andrew,
I don't know a single serious roller breeder that would ever put a cock of another breed in with his rollers.
You never know when that fantail is going to jump on a roller hen.

Once theyr are mated, then they should stick together but there is always that chance that they cross with the other birds in the loft. If you want to guarantee the parentage, then individual pens is the only way to go.

Andrew, Yes, they will cross... In the loft its always like 2am in a bar. Anyone willing is fair game. If the hens mate aint looking another cock will jump her if he can and if shes willing ... or dont put up much fight..LOL
Seperate them if at all possible. You will get crosses !!!! ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

kopetsa....to be on the safe side. I keep all my birds in individual pens until the 2nd egg is laid. Then I return to the open loft. This way I am sure what birds are paired to what bird... Its just my method.. The times that I didn't practicd this method I always got a cross in their somehow.... ---------- Fly High and Roll On

Hey Norman... Is the individual breeding pretty much the norm over there? I`m just guessing that over here in the states its about half n half. Some do it, some dont. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Hey Norm I do all Individual breeding and then sometimes I take the eggs and give them to open loft fosters. But the Indian Fantails are a little big so I just wondered. They are now in Individuals.. :)

hi butch no m8 there aint that many who do individual i think its the only way just my opinion i think people who breed in a open loft n sell birds with a pedigree showing cock n hen parents should not bother with the paperwork

Hi Andrew, I keep an open loft with a few different breeds. However, to keep any of them from breeding, I replace all of the eggs with dummies after the 2nd egg is laid. They will continue to incubate the dummies a full cycle, giving the hen a chance to recover a bit before laying the next clutch.
I plan to breed my Rollers in the Spring, but I will definitely move the pairs to individual breeding pens to make sure they are not crossing. There's just no other sure way to ensure that the pairs aren't cross-breeding.
Fantails are great, btw - I have a few of those. Have fun with them! ~Karen

After I pair up I keep them in indies til they get into the groove. After they are set I lock each pair down when the cycle rolls around to mating time. If your running fosters the breeders should all be ready to breed again about the same time. ---------- V99 blue sky single beat in cadance performing now earth beckons the winged drawn breath is let quickly forth orchestral movement follows
