Hey you guys, I'm curious what do you guys use to put in your wood flooring to make cleaning easier? i've heard that some uses sand? What other products can be used? And is it necessary? is it fine without any other flooring products? JW!! i just wanted to know so that i can improve my loft. Thanks!!

Tou, It's seasonal for me,and change according to needs.Right now in Hawaii the rains are coming in on a horizontal angle,so the lofts are getting hit hard.In the dryer times of the year I use a absorbant[litter],and do a complete changeout once a month.Currently using tarpaper rolls[like what roofers use],rolls right up,or can be scraped for extended use.I'm in the process of taking down my lofts to meet code compliances,so my new design will be less labor intesive....Aloha,Todd

hey Tou what I have on my floor is I have a plywood floor but what i did is built 1x4 frame and put 1x1 wire on the frame so that the droppings will fall on the floor and the birds dont walkj on there droppings and when it it time for cleaning i lift the wire floor off and roll up the newspaper.the birds never get droppings on there feet and if they drop feed they will not eat it. It is the same like a kit box is built but you can walk on the floor. I try to make it as easy to maintain and less work . GlassG

Hey stiff, that is a good idea. but isn't it kinda hard to lift off the wires when you put em in already? or is it not stapled or nailed down? just wondering.

Tou,checkout you feed supplier,a 50lb bag covers a 4x8 section with a 1/2 inch layer.Lightly broom the encrusted droppings off the top, takes a couple minutes.Right now the tarpaper is in place of the absorbant[the kind for garage oil clean up],because the absorbant is counter productive, with the driving rains...Aloha,Todd

Scrape often is the easiest way to keep the loft floor clean. Sand will keep it broken up, but sand is also heavy; especially when saturated with poop and it become just that: saturated. Gotta keep the shit out of the loft. ---------- Just My Take On Things

Hey,
I use Wood Pellets...you know the kind for a pellet stove...they are about 4.00 a bag...I used 3 bags to cover my breeder loft floor...8'X5'.....they absorb moisture....and the loft is easy to clean..I just go in with a rake...rake it lightly and toss the poop and whatever pellets are stuck to the poop...over time the pellets will break down to a saw dust and I just keep on scraping.....I am on the same 3 bags for over a year and I am ready to add another bag....you dont have to clean the whole floor...I just add a bag when needed.....and the loft smells like wood....NICE...
rock and ROLL
Paul
I have tried sand, pine needles even kitty litter..but this is an easy clean up...the difference from the kitty litter sand and pellets...is that the sand and kitty litter produce a lot of dust during raking....the pellets produce nothing...

Where do you buy those wood pellets? Feed store? I actually never seen a wood pellets for pellet stove before. Yeah, I am naive. We use gas range and electric range to cook. Or are we talking about some type of stove?

Hey Tou, I use wood shavings,a bag cost $3 or 4 and a 1/2 bag will cover 8ft x 12ft. I keep my old feed bags and when I clean it up I lightly sprinkle it with the water hose and put it in the bags. I do it when necessary. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay
