Is there currently a fund or organized effort to protect pigeon fanciers from communities outlawing them?

Not that I have ever heard of! Wished there were, I have a close friend that lives in one of these communities. Kinda scary to see years of work being stripped away from you just cause a jerk moves in next door!

I would donate!

We have a fund like this in the hound community. I would be willing to help get something started along the lines of an all breed defense fund...I have read ads of guys selling out due to this type of thing and became concerned. This would be a very good chance for all the clubs to organize, educate, and get legal support.

I like the way you think over there Norman. We had a neighbor here a few years ago that didnt quite fit in... Someone shot up his house in the night. He moved the next day.

Todd,

I was hoping you could lead me to some help in protecting the rights of pigeon owners. I have had quite a few calls about citties outlawing the keeping of domestic pigeons. This is an excellent hobby for intercity kids and adults a like. Any info. you might have would be greatly appreciated, as you know the loss of rights to own any animal will hurt all of us.

Hey Mike - I think they got Sara bogged down with some other stuff right now. It would seem like a logical first step to contact all the pigeon organizations for their help with this matter. Much the same way that our dog clubs all around the country call on us to help them. I'm not sure if there are pigeon registries or what but certainly there are organizations that oversee the different events that you mention below. It would seem as though they would have a special interest in seeing that sport survive. They most likely already have a network in place to make contacts at whichever level is appropriate for different situations.

Other than that my only advice would be to reference the back issues CB to learn different strategies from the sections on how to go about protecting your dog ownership rights or rights to hunt, etc. I would have to guess that the same strategies apply regardless of what interest you are trying to protect. Admittedly this topic is not my strong suit. I understand your concern for your sport and respect the fact that you are wanting to put out the effort to help get something done.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance. I do wish you luck with this project in '09

Merry Christmas,

Todd

Sara,

Todd Kellum gave me your email addy..We are having a little problem and really need your help. I don't know how familiar you are with the sport of pigeon raising, but it is very large here in the states, just like our coonhounds..Pigeons are flown in races, others are able to acrobatically perform in the air, and are judged..Many others are of different sizes, shapes, colors, etc. and are shown..

The problem now is that communities have started outlawing the keeping pigeons. Pigeons have been kept and raised in cities for a very long time, by people of all walks of life. In the intercity they have been a source of enjoyment for our youth, keeping them occupied and out of trouble. Now due to the very few uneducated neighbors complaining, some cities have began outlawing them. We went through our own problems with antis in the hound world.

Sara we need to take the same actions with pigeons that was taken with hounds. Any help you could give us would greatly be appreciated, i.e.. how to pull all clubs together in unity etc. As I am sure you are quite aware we all need to band together for the strength needed to protect our heritage.

Respectfully,

Mike Trevis

I was grandfathered in to keep animals in south jordan utah, but any one moving in could not. I moved any way because the presure was a pain in the but. One neighbor got a ticket for continually calling animal control on me and wasting the officers time.

A bird pooped on his roof and he came over all bent out of shape. I told him I did not fly my birds today but there are thousands of magpies around and he should call there owner.

Any way I moved to the country and only the racoons bug me.

electric-man, if your friend had his birds befor the law was made then his birds would be grandfathered in, he can breed more birds but he can mot buy more new birds. People keep running in to that around the charlotte area the city keeps growing and people don't like the smell of a farm, and a lot of small towns keep making new rules.

Thats a great movie, Norlan. I`ve loaned it it a lot of people. One friend had it for 3 or 4 months. He said his young daughter just kept watching it over and over. I told him to keep it as long as she wanted it. I hope it made a lasting impression on her.
