Andrew, Not sure anyone on this site really cares much about a 50 year old "standard for Show Rollers. And I use the term rollers, tongue in cheek ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

How do you know it's 50 years old? Yes A LOT do as they have already emailed me for it. They are not show rollers, they are Birmingham rollers. Just showing people what the judges sometimes look for. Obviously in regards to performance it means nothing!

Andrew, The show standard was developed by the old PRC which became the URC. Standard was written back in the 50s and don't believe it has changed since then. Showing Rollers almost ruined the breed. ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

Showing rollers does NOT ruin the breed. 'Breeding for show' DOES ruin the breed.

One more response and then I'm done with this thread. Your youthful naivete is showing. By the time the guys who were "showing rollers" got done, the birds were as big as Kings, built like modenas and couldn't even fly let alone roll. The problem with showing performance breeds is the judges. Once breeders learn what the judges like they start breeding for those traits and hence the breed goes in the crapper. Sorry to be so negative on this but you struck a nerve. Been there, done that. got the T-shirt!! ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

Okay one more response. Andrew, I am not trying to put you down lad. Your enthusiasm is contagious, I hope you never lose it. Been in this hobby for almost 50 years and seen the damage "showing rollers" did to the breed. I believe that no Birmingham Roller should ever be put in a show pen unless it is a certified spinner! Enjoy the hobby learn and move the breed forward, if you want to show pigeons then I suggest you select Jacobins, Trumpeters, Fantails etc. Leave the rollers out of it. ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

I have Indian Fantails too.. lol I have to say I will never breed strictly for showing. But it is always fun to pick out my birds in which I think will do well at the shows just to see the judges opinion and which he thinks is the best.. And yeah I have one the last 3 shows up here. :D I could possibly keep winning with the same bird until TT enters his birds.. lol

I dont think the Standard is that important,it is part of history,we can always look back and see what they concidered quality in a show pen. I think showing rollers si great, its part of the hobby, its about putting 100 birds in show pens and seeing which one the Judge will like more. It helps motivate new comers to see a great group of people hanging out and having a good time. The table show should not be taken for anything more than fun, just becouse your bird wins best of Champion dosent mean that bird rolls to the highest quality,,,Its just for fun,,,Dont forget it.. Dont take it seriuse. Hector Coya-SGVS

Since when did the Birmingham Roller have a show standard? There are two breeds of pigeons, show birds and performance birds, our birds we raise are in the latter category. Really its to WHOS standard, and who is justified on making it an official standard. I can say I myself strive for a standard on what body confirmation and type should be. The Universal Spinner Standard. Correct body type will create the Correct Spin. ---------- Gary

these days the rollers are all mixed people breed for colour not roll and mix other breeds with rollers.People want pretty birds so mixing is what they do.The show is for a fancy pigeon like fantail modenas not a flying roller. If a roller is shown it should come with papers that the bird is a good roller in the air not that it is pretty.

Rollerheaven, not all have mixed breeds some of us believe in keeping them pure and breeding for performance and not for s***'s and giggles. Sunflower said it correctly and Hector, shows should not be taken seriously at all. ---------- Sal Ortiz

I agree with Sal, Shows shouldnt be taken seriously. Do you ever notice at the shows whats everyone doing....hanging out talking to eachother and having a good time. The birds arent the main attraction oddly to say. People bring birds to show because its fun and it raises money for the club. Heck the Raffle and Auction get more attention than the show itself lol.
Ive noticed at the shows the judges are not SHOW guys, they are old school rollermen and hardcore competitive flyers. They know what to look for in a Performing roller. Even at that they all have their own personal standards in what they look for, it mirrors what they have in their own loft and see in the sky. Its sometimes nice to get an input on what "right" as far as body type and confirmation. Its all for fun...in the end its all about how a bird is in the air. ---------- Gary

Hey guys,I posted this on the other thread about the Roller Club lawn show. I have an idea I'm going to run by our club members. We all see each others birds on the flys and know which ones we like at each others kits. My idea is that short of certifying the bird we all know what we like and if I were to see a bird at your house that I saw spin real nice I could get the band# and nominate it for a table show in the fall or during lockdown. A bird would need to get 3 nominations to get in and you cant nominate your own birds. What this does is assure that every bird shown has some ability to perform. I would like to see these birds shown in flying shape, frayed flights and all. Like Hector said, its about hanging out and having a good time. There is no standard for a performing pigeon except the performance you see in the air. Ya get someone you respect to pick out some birds and give some people a few plaques.
