i have noticed a lot fanciers in the states keep birds of self colours, is there any specific reason for that? can someone educate me please?

Oh my friend, It is thought by some that a solid color bird is a far superior performer then a patterned bird.

I for one put my breeders together to hopefully produce some awesome performance. If one comes out a baldhead or a bellneck etc. I just consider it a bonus.

Some folks just like the looks of a solid color bird and so when they produce a marked bird it is culled regardless of the birds performance.

So being a performance breeder I do not look at their colors when selecting a pair.

Each fancier has the right to breed what they choose and some like selfs and some like variety. Some famiies of birds are predomitly selfs because the creator of that family has choose to cull any showing patterns.

So its just a choice by that breeder.

Good response David. I think it is mostly the family that the breeder is working with. If his family is mostly selfs then linebreeding or inbreeding this family will produce more selfs. My family carries a lot of piebald, therefore I get predominantly badges, beards, balds and headmarked birds with an occasional self thrown in regardless of the colors of the parents. I find them as well as the selfs pleasant to look at both on the ground and in the air. Also I have a lot of difficulty distinguishing between a number of selfs in a kit whereas the piebald birds throw enough different tail markings that it is easier to ID specific birds that are or are not performing to standard.

Joe good point on being able to tell wich bird is doing what with some white showing it is a bit easier.

Self birds all in a group you need to die the wings or tail.

My technique is to fly them individually with other colored pigeons. Takes a while to do this but eventually I get it figured out.

sheeze, these are the goofiest responses that I have ever heard, and shows the mind of those that breed for other things besides performance (although they clainm different)
No one in thier right mind is culling "good" marked birds because they like selfs, sheez.

Speedball, it is mainly family specific, and you have many S Calif guys posting pictures here, or birds that came out of S. Calif. many of which are out of particular families where many of the birds are selfs.
Also we have many areas over here where we fly under blue sky much of the time where selfs just plain look better over marked birds, if I lived under cast skys much of the time no way would I fly a self colored family.

hi all
we in the uk rarely breed for selfs.as its very rare the ones we do breed are really good.my main 15 year cock was bred off a self black cock which was good.
but i noticed because we get a lot of cloudy skys he sometimes looked better some days than others.ive since noticed selfs always look much better in a blue cloudless sky.

Scott, We have a solid overcast here today so I just flew a kit that has 4 dark self birds and the rest white flighted birds. You are right the white flighted birds do look better under those conditions. Guess I never really noticed that before. Learned something new today. Thanks

the nearest i got to self coloured birds would be black beards with mix wings. going for self colours to show quality in roll is cheating in my eyes. i like to see the raw mechanics of a spin. you find a pied pigeon rolling at full ballistics teaches you more about the spin. the self coloured spinner does not show the detail of roll. only a round ball. how would you calculate the speed on a black self rolling? p.s if a black self is rolling and next to it is a black badge rolling, both got same style, same velocity and same depth, i bet you will prefer the black badge. i do!
