What are your views on color balancing?

I believe that color (pigmentation of the feather) has nothing to do with performance. If an individual likes variety of color that is a personal choice. Certain families of pigeons may have stiff pigeons that can be white or any other color but the color has nothing to do with performance.

Oh ok. Let me ask you this. rec red to rec red to rec red,all being excellent performers in the air worth breeding from. Do you think that you would loose some stability if you kept breeding rec red to rec red?

To me it seems that the blue and red checks are the more stable birds. For example, I had a couple of birds roll down last year that were rec red abd there nest mates were blu checks. Both of the rec reds from this pair hit, but I am still flying the blue checks and they have QSDC

This may be but was it the color that made them roll down or the genetic makeup of that particular bird or group of birds? Could this same scenario be opposite in another loft? I believe and know that it could because it is not a color factor but a genetic factor for that particular line.

I had a family of nice blue bar birds that I breed together for years and saw improvment in the roll as I worked with them. On the other hand I had some blacks that I tried it with and I got way to many roll downs. Black and blue bar are really the same color.

Point being the words by 3757 is what I say are correct. Color has no bearing on the performance of any given bird.

Do not breed spin to spin? I so do not agree with that stament. Yes you want to select for proper body type but for heavens sake do not breed from a cull. Or in other words a none spinner, you are not helping your family by not breeding best to best.

I have seen the chart before of color balance etc and find it quit interesting but I can tell you from many hours of staring in the sky a birds plumage color and the asumed fact that the ro gene and the gene for control are attached to the plumage color is something I do not buy into.

I am not saying that I know all but I do have the knowledge to know that with what I have experienced, color has no bearing.

I do not believe that a softer color to a hard color is the answear I wish it was, then it would be real easy to have a coop of spinners.

I do believe that a soft feathered bird should not be breed to another soft feather bird but that is different then soft color.

I do agree that a mating of a 20-60' to 10'-15' makes sence as two deep birds together seems to have produced a large amount roll downs.

This is just my take on things and being new to comp rollers I am drawing off of my years of flying in the yard for my own breath taking moments.

Big Willy,

I myself do not believe in color balancing....I think some things hit in a couple of lofts and then it becomes Gospel.....Look at Scott Campbell...he would have a loft full of stiffs...his birds are mainly Hard Colors.....Tony would have a bunch of Roll Downs ...his are in the soft color area....I have been told that grizzles are to hot...and Blue Checks are stiff and blah blah blah.....Well...my kits are that of the rainbow...(not color breeding rainbow)..LOL....My A-team for example..has some Blue Bars, Some Blue Checks, Mottles, Grizzles, Red Checks, Red Bars...Torts..etc etc...

As far as breeding....Last year I bred A BLACK Cock to a Blue Check Hen...had some great performers....Bred two grizzles together..same thing....As far as roll downs...I have had every color roll down..LOL...

I really dont understand..dont breed spin to spin..what breed spin to stiff...or stiff to stiff...I breed Spin to Spin...my best birds to my best birds....Color has no meaning when I pick my pairs....

I pick my pairs..based on performance...and type and then I cross my fingers....the most important thing is this...

When you prove out birds in the stock loft...pay attention to what they are throwing....if they produce speed...depth...etc...for example..My red Baldy Produces Depth on everything I throw him on...I try and put him on hens that throw the speed and are powerful hens.....I have cocks that tend to throw speed...and hens that throw deeper birds...I try and balance by body type and performance....so far it has worked out...color balancing does NOT come into play in my loft and never has.....it his hard enough trying to figure out what to breed what to what....

All I need is to not put two birds toghter based on color....and miss the golden egg..

rock and ROLL
