approx how old will a squab be before it starts to eat on it's own. I have 2 that are 19 and 17 days old. I saw them picking in the nest so i put a little food in the nesting box and notice they were trying to eat it?

That's already a start, but they won't fully pack themselves up. I kick my babies out when their parents kick them out of the nest box. ---------- W.Cha

One was out of the nest box this morning. I look for it and found it with another one around the same age where the pair had made a nest on the floor underneath another nesting box. It's only one squab in that nest I found the nest mate dead in the middle of the floor a week ago had a bruise on the head i think one of the cocks pecked it to death. anyway the one that was out of the top nest was in the nest with the single squab I checked it's breast to see if it had been fed and it hadn't but the squab that belong in that nest had been fed and was full. I took the other one and put it back up in the nest box it belong to put some fresh food in so all the birds could eat. After the father ate he flew in the nest box and fed the squab that was empty. I don't think the parents kicked him out the nest he must have fell out or got curious and jump out itself maybe like 3 feet down. how old before the parent kick them out the nest ?

If the young bird does not know how to fly back to its nest box, then immediately put that bird back to its nest box because it can be killed by other adult birds. ---------- W.Cha

Washington is right ..make sure you have it set that once they get curious or want to eat and since the parents are not with them at that time they will go after them on their own jumping from their nest bowl they see the parents do it they think they can too.and its disaster time.. so lock them in that they won't go out if its too high.. its your responsibility to make sure everything is going smoothly .. ---------- Ralph

Hey Butch...LOL
I take them out of the nest and put them on the floor when the tail feather is about an inch long. If you are in a cold area right now , Id wait till they feather out under the wing. They will still chase the parents ( or any other bird willing to feed them), But they learn quick to feed them selves once on the floor. I try to have several about the same age, all on the floor together, and then put a shelf board about 5 or 6 inches off the floor. they will hide there from the cocks that tend to pick at them. I think having several about the same age all on the floor together helps create a bond and then the kitting comes easier when you start flying them. Hope this helps ... Good luck with them. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

They start pecking food around 3 weeks old. By the 4th week, they should be eating now by themselves, but still begs food from their parents.

Rollingline no need to yell.As for you question I'm originally from Los Angeles Ca.my neck of the woods South Central aka the hood!!! Born and raised. I presently live in Northern Ca fairfield by way of East Oakland aka the hood!!! I first started raising pigeons when I was 12 years old 39 years ago back then they were squabs I never heard the word squeakers until i got back in the game 7 months ago. So if I'm a bit behind in the lingo don't sweat it. Not that serious to me. Pigeons didn't just start rolling when you decide to get into the hobby and what makes you the correction officer????? ---------- ~~~~~~butch

I would think that squabs are new born = baby birds squeakers are toddlers YB, juveniles to adults. Sure they start squeaking as they get older so i can see where that name come from. but what are they before they start to squeak ??? ---------- ~~~~~~butch
