Just curious which does more damage to you. I know we all prefer not to have any of them around our area. I just got my first hit of a falcon today. Been having hawks for some time and they are bad enough. Now the falcons are moving in. I got two that torn up my kit right now none of them havent come back yet.

kham,
From my experience, your birds have a better chance against an attack from the Hawks. The Pigeons have a fighting chance to get away from them better than...
The Falcons, these SOB's DO NOT miss, ever. Falcons take the pigeons from the air in flight and very rarely miss their target.
Welcome to my world....

I prefer hawks they seem to be slower and dont bother my bird much at all. they usually spook my birds but havent seen an attempt to chase them. Falcon is the worst. If they are on your kit your gonna lose some forsure. xue

hawks may seem slow, but when there hungry, you're in for a real surprise about how fast they can be.

I have never been hit by the Peregrine but I would think a falcon stooping from above would have a greater hit percentage, I have been hit by the Sharpshin and the Cooper, they hide in the trees and seem to work their way closer and closer then when the rollers are trapping the hawks swoop up at them while they are headed down, so far I have not lost many in the 2 1/2 years I have been working with rollers, when they do miss they drive the Rollers Sky High but don't follow? ---------- "Semper Fi" SD

FALCONS, they are notorius! If the kit is young they will chase off most or all until they get one. I've had them pass off a bird in air and get another. Not counting the 2 or 3 they hit and rip open. Falcons are by far the worst of the two evils.

Hey Andrew, "...They won't go away until they have two birds each day"? You mean to say that you are losing 60 birds a month? Even if it is half that, you should consider rethinking your methods. Sounds like you setup a soup kitchen in which case why bother flying rollers if only to be made a meal in short order? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

For me...Coopers are not more then an irritation like a fly that wont go away....Hawks NEVER get an A-team bird or B-Team bird....they may get a retard every now and then....but a falcon hits and that is it...bye bye Birdie...LOL....I have only lost 4 birds in 5 years to a falcon and I think they were just passing through...Now when I am training young birds I will lose a bird to a hawk now and then....I mostly lose them to the hawks when they get chased and then get lost...
But Falcons are the devil ....but I am torn...because I love to see the power of a falcon...awesome killing machine...
Coopers hawks are like a parasite....nothing pretty about them....OTher hawks are beautiful birds..

especially the cooper....the cooper is deadly and always catches at least one of my rollers....i get peregrine falcons too...one time i got hit by 2 peregrine falcons at the same time, it was like they planned the attack...one came first and broke the kit into two groups then both tried to get one of the groups but luckily they didn't get any...but i get hawks too but hawks are too slow..i had a red tail land on my loft once it was huge and i was only 3ft from it..i also get bald eagles every now and then too...its weird i didn't think bald eagles attack pigeons or anything at all in the air.

If you lose a pigeon to a BOP every time you fly them it makes little difference wether it is a hawk or falcon. Once a bird is taken by a falcon you can usualy say goodbye to it, but I have rescued a few rollers from hawks because they tend to take their prey to ground and if you see the direction of glide and can run fast enough you may reach it before it has killed the pigeon. A few months ago one of my neghbours opened a back window and shouted and clapped his hands to scare a hawk off. It had gone to ground with one of my birds in his garden. Pete

hi all it all depends whats hitting you .we get hammered by both hawks + falcons.but me personaly i only get hit by the perigrine.but those of you that say falcons never miss your wrong they miss lots of times.they also take lots of times.but i reckon its about 50-50. like pete said at least with the hawk you can sometimes chase them off thier prey as they have to go to ground with them .then the bstds start to eat them alive.but a perigrine kills its prey in the air + flys away with it.the perigrine is more dangerous when building up to laying its eggs.as the hen has to build her self up with protein as she sits the eggs until they hatch.

It very much depends on terrain around your loft. If you have a lot of tall trees around your loft for the coopers to hide in, then they will be more deadly. They are very good ambush hunters if they have cover you are in trouble. I rarely have a peregrine attack below the tree tops (my house).
The falcons drive the birds down into the trees. ( I have been forced to cull a lot of tree sitters due to falcons)
The coopers drive the up up up. ( I have lost a lot of birds to cooper induced overflies)
I have lost more birds to the falcons. All of my overflies have been due to coopers. Falcons cause more problems to kit action.
Given a choice I would rather deal with the coopers than the peregrines.

i rarely lose any of mines..but when i do its coopers..where i live there is a big field and big trees..but most of the time they are way too slow to catch my birds with help from the feral/commie pigeons..they are the first to catch the signal if they see a predator then my roller follows..see commies are a good thing lol..

I get them all, but the falcon will usually move on when I lock down for a week or so. The coopers will not move on, and are in bunches. So if I had my pick I would rather just deal with my falcon on my current conditions. Falcon will hit here and there maybe giving me a few free fly days/weeks, coopers here daily. Not flying right now, had one get out of my A team while trying to feed them and two coopers were on him within seconds. This is the 5th time this has happend except with other team. Hope to have somewhat of a clear sky when fly season comes around... ---------- Efren Lopez SGVS http://lopezloft22.bravehost.com/

I know what the Red tail hawk looks like I've had a couple of attacks from them they are pretty bold but sort of slow. Since I've gotten back in the hobby I'm always looking up in the sky now and I notice the redtail hawks everywhere. I was on my way home from work today. Richmond Ca. to Fairfield Ca 35 miles distance I counted 15 of them from the time i left my job till I got home. I'm not that familar with these BOP but what is the one with the long tail. I don't know what kind of predator hawk/falcon this is but it do not play. This one took 3 of my birds and I have been lock down since 2 months as of today. A friend of mine live in vallejo wanted to fly a few of his birds for me a few weeks ago. he let 6 birds out the birds were up for no more then 5 mins and this long tail what ever came from no where and was on the hunt 2 of his birds never came back in we although we didn't see them get snatched we no he got them. funny thing tho. there were a flock of those commies maybe 15 to 20 on the phone wire then start to fly this hawk or whatever it was had no interest in the commies matter of fact it was flying as close as to feet to the commie kit and did not attack one of them but was going at my buddy birds with a vengence? two questions 1. what kind of predator is this one with the long parrot like tail? 2 why don't they chase the commies as tough as they chase the rollers?? ---------- ~~~~~~Butch

Sounds like a Coopers Hawk or a sharped Shinned hawk.
They like to go after the Rollers because Rollers just fly in circles. The commies will take off and away and find a new place to live or make home if necessary. They also have better homing ability.

They are both dangerous to rollers. The falcon is the deadlier of the two. Either way you don't want them when your birds are flying.
