that while using any medication or electrolites on your birds, the oyster shells well just pass through the birds without any good...is that true or not? if so then tell me how you feed them with oster shells...
For this vetrx, how do you guys give them to your birds..I read the directions and just wanted to be sure about it http://www.jedds.com/-strse-1117/VETRX-PIGEON-REMEDY-2/Detail.bok
Thanks

I always remove the Oyster shell before medicating the birds. I have heard that it you medicate them and they eat oyster shell is like not giving them no medication at all.
So remove the oyster Shell before medicating them. Why risk it. Nothing will happened if you remove the oyster shell for 2 weeks. I usually remove it 3 days before I medicate them. Then I put it back 2 weeks after just to be save.

this is a passage cut from the book The Last of The Greats and The next Generation By. Mr. Thomas R. Hatcher
"Rollers as any pigeon, require a mineral mixture
(Health Grit) available at all times. It is
essential for proper digestion. The bird's
muscular gullet uses the grit to aid in the
grinding of grain and pellets which would
otherwise be indigestible by the bird. The-
mixture also serves as an important source of
minerals."
P.S. OYSTER SHELL IS ORGANIC GRIT

Wendell Levi in his book The Pigeon tells of an experiment they did with five pair of 5 year old breeders. They took all grit and sand away for 8 months. The sqab production dwindled to practicaly nothing and at the end the young that managed to hatch were underweight, but the stock birds themselves apart from dry feathers seemed very little changed. I don't think taking grit away for a few weeks will do any harm. Pete.

We don't get the grit we used too. The old grit was Red cross, when your breeders were feeding, their crops would turn totally red. There was no oyster shell in it, which I would perfer, lots of old timers don't want oyster shell, usually too much salt in it. Too much salt is not good for the birds. My birds get grit, only in winter, but do have a Vitamineral block all year round. With no ill effects.

I really like getting that old Red Cross grit also. My birds would eat it like candy every time. I still use red grit, but cant remember the name. I found 100 pounds last year in Louisville Ky.at a pet supply. I`m almost out now. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

I dont give grit per se. I feed some pellets at least once a week. I also use a wild bird seed that has small granite grit. Breeders get oyster shell during the breeder season along with the Danish pickstone. I dont seem to have any health issues. ---------- V99 blue sky single beat in cadance performing now earth beckons the winged drawn breath is let quickly forth orchestral movement follows

butch I don't see why not the birds know what they need so they would eat what they need .my birds would leave everything and eat the red grit but I give grit three times a week to my kit birds or twice I don't leave it in there with them I give it and take it away because sometimes I when I cut the feed when training what they do is make up for it by eating more grit and I see red poo all over. .how do I know this when I give them the right amount of feed they don't even look at it.. ---------- Ralph
