I was just wondering if you keep water in with your kit birds all the time, or just when you feed them. ---------- Yours in the Hobby Don Lunau

Hey there, I would say just consider the effects on a good roller when it has just taken a nice drink of water and is released to fly and goes into a spin and centrifugal force wants to flush that water from its crop - into its throat and out of its beak. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

I leave it in all the time.....Like tonys comment...dont fly your birds after you feed...they drink a lot of water....Pigeons only drink like twice to 3 times a day and less during the winter...in the morning..they will take a little sip....then you feed them and they they take big gulps...then in the evening before they roost they will take another sip...

I usually leave the water in, I will take it out the nite before the fly or in the morning if I know Im flying late. Very true what Tony said. I have seen birds spin the water out by centrifugal force, looks like a pinwheel on the 4th of July. The birds did go on and perform after they flushed the water out. Like any coach you have to make sure that the athelete's are hydrated, my birds work best when I have taken the water away before they fly. I know they are not thirsty as they wont fly if they need water. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

Hey bigwilly, that's right. Since I normally will fly the birds in the AM, I will remove the water after they have come in and eaten and all are up on the perches. If it is hot weather, I will wait until the later afternoon to remove it. I have also noticed the birds seem to kit a bit tighter when water is not available all day. But that is just my birds. You may find things are different with yours. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

I give my birds water twice a day in morning after a fly and in the evening ..and even if they are not flying like in lock up they still get water by me two or three times a day.I never leave it in this way its always clean no dust or anything..gives me more reason to go to them too ..like the water boy is here.. To be a competitive flyer you must keep the minimum weight of your birds in check. In order to accomplish this you must remove the water no less than 2 hours from the time of release. Water is essential to the birds in order to digest thier food properly.Keep in mind that they require alot of water during the winter months contrary to what you might think. If your feeding grit to your kit birds they will consume more water because of the salt content within the grit. If you haven't made this a practice of pulling your water it will take the birds at least a month to adjust to it.Some birds when you first pull the water will come down early and some will not kit but as they become accustom to the lack of water they are use to having they will adjust and accept the conditions. Never try and change something and expect to get instantaneous results. Everything that we do with the birds becomes a rountine that they have to adjust to.

If you're flying early a.m. pull the water the night before. If not, pull it at least 3 hours before you kick em out. They should be well hydrated.
