What do you guys use for your birds nesting materials so that they wont make a big mess?...I use hay and it works fine but somehow they scoop up the hays everywhere and when they do lay eggs it's so little left in the bowl...which is not good..Thanks

Hay works good, but try putting in some pine needles.
They are a little heavier & don't end up all over the place

I use Tobacco stem for the first time and its remain intact in the bowl and is an excellent nesting material that helps keeps down lice and feather mites in the adult pigeons and youngsters while in the nest during breeding.can't go wrong with that.

Spanky, I agree, plastic nest bowls and good nest pad is all you need. And I'm breeding in Kansas in the winter using just the pads

I don't like the nest pads. I like my birds building there own nests. I just put the material in the nesting area & let the birds do the rest. Some build castles, some just a few needles.

Spanky is right, the good nest bowls with the large pads work the best. Tie wrap the pad to the nest bowl and just hose them off after the young have left the bowl. They last for years.
Pine needles require more work and clean up.

Jay,
Thanks for the tip on the wood pellets. I've got a pellet stove and buy my pellets by the ton. After I saw your post a couple of weeks ago, I tried them on the loft floor. It is fantastic. Thanks again

If you use Pine neddles make sure it is not the short Sharp ones. I was using neddles from a Pinion Pine in my yard. They are short, and sharp enough to stab a youngster. I had a neddle go in to a crop last year. I Stopped using neddles from that tree.

Joe you breeding already. I have tried breeding in dec and jan but just gave it up do to the cold and wind we have here in kansas. What i did raise most were taken by BOP. I'll start at the end of feb or early march. I like using pine shavings and long pine needles. Mainly because i like watching the birds build there nests. When i was at Richard Millers in ohio he uses a piece of carpet under the nest bowl to insulate the bowl from the cold wood. Ive been doing that now. Don Sutton sent me some plastic nest bowls and i'm going to try them this year. He got them from some store there in texas, He said they work great. Actually there dog food bowls. I'll use nest pads in the bottom of the plastic bowl along with pine shaving and pine needles. I cut my nest pads out of and old rubber backed carpet. Joe I talked to Ferrell and gave him your #. He said he will give you a call. Jim Bowen

Thanks Jim, I'm just trying to make up a little ground that I lost year with the new loft construction so I started breeding a little early this year. Ordinarily I don't pair up my birds until mid-March. Got 10 nice squeakers in the kit box already tho.

Jim,
I showed Don the dogfood bowls when he was at my house. I got it from someone on here.
99 cents each at the dollar store.Drill a few 1/2 inch holes in the bottom. Put one of those big old cup style coffee filters down in it before you put nesting materials in it and voila`
One each,bowl,nesting,ready for use.

Kenny great idea Thanks. Don found his at a furniture store and for some reason they sold plastic bowls to. Don sent me 6 to try. My wife told me that they sell them at the dollar store like you said. Any way I have 20 now. Just enough for my foster loft. Silver Tail your right about the sand. When I was a kid in calif thats all i used. I think its to cold here to use sand though. Don told me he uses cat litter and it works great. It all depends on where you live. Me I'll stick with the pine bedding or aspen bedding and pine needles. Jim Bowen

Sal how many pair of breeders are you going to pair up. I'll probably pair up 8 pair. Let me know when you pair up so i can keep up with you. What do you use for nesting material there in Arkansas? Jim Bowen
