i have a question for experienced pigeon owners.
say you are going to go away for some years, you put all your birds(that can roll exceptionally well) in a big open loft,(pure rollers only) all you do is feed them, let them pair up on them self, and let them breed all year for a couple of years!
and when you come back; say in 4 years from leaving them, you take their youngs that are 1-2 months from their birth day, and you fly all the youngs that are 1-2 months from the day you return.
do you guys think that the babies can roll? since there was never any new blood introduced.

absolutely they will roll,i just think they will need training and getting their wings strong, once they take to the air they will roll,it might not come overnight though but its all in the blood or the dna of the parents,if the parents are rollers then the offspring will be rollers.i have breeders that have not flown in over a year or longer and the offspring from them are good rollers. I think the question is will the birds bred down from the offspring of the original birds roll, because in 4 years there will be several generations of birds breeding in a very overcrowded loft, lol In that case you are asking how many generations of self-selection it would take to ruin a lifetimes work of carefull selection for performance. I have no doubt that they would produce rollers (if the originals were good producers of roll) but who knows what quality or stability you would end up with. If you are talking about just the original stock birds, then there will be no problems if they are still producing. Many fanciers leave birds in stock for their productive lifetime. Pete.

Just curious.....what would prompt you to post such an outragious question ?? No experienced flyer would ever do such a thing.... Any person that would attempt to do such a thing would be PRUELY a bird keeper !!!

how about just putting the hens and cocks in separate lofts and just leave them if you are going away for a few years why not give the birds to a freind and get some back when you are ready .for them again

I think you'll be asking for one of the biggest headaches in your life if you let them breed, Four years is a long time not knowing whats going on in your loft, It'll put you back a square one.JMO ----------

Just seperate your cocks and hens. When you return you could start right where you left off. Norm ---------- N/A Loft
