Is the borax harmful if the birds drink some of it in the bath water? How much borax do you mix with a gallon of water?

20 mule team borax, a fist full into the bath pan and add water.
az-je, I seen the birds drink without any problems for over 25 years.

My father was a tippler man & once a year for a week, usually around Christmas he would put 2oz of bleach in a gallon of water to give the birds to deworm them. thats all the medication they got. I do the same with my rollers. On the weekend it was -30 degrees celcius & I gave the birds a bath. Like all pigeons they all got in at once had their bath. They were not out of the bath for 30 seconds & there was ice on their feathers. They all layed in the sun for a long time prunning themselves. By the way, the bath had only water in it. ---------- Yours in the Hobby Don Lunau

thanks for the info on 20 mule team borax in the bath water to keep the rollers "bug" free. i'm going to try that. my birds get a bath more often (once a week or every 10 days) in the summer time to help them stay cool. they love it. also, in the summer i used to put a little splash of bleach in the drinking and bath water. seems to help keep the feather lice away. with using the borax can i skip using the bleach? i hate using the powder and will try anything else. thanks, J.

Never use bleach in the drinking waters, it kills the good gut bacteria your birds need to stay healthy. If you use clorox periodically to disinfect your waterers then make sure you rinse them out well. Also use some probiotic or yogurt to reestablish the healthy gut bacteria. ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe
