Hey guys/girls,
my question is: Do you see raizing and flying rollers as a sport or a hobby.
I see it as a hobby, but I have seen many people call it a sport.
I'm not trying to start any arguing or anything of that sort, just curious thats all.
Norm

I beleive both words are appropriate, although I prefer sport because the birds and their coach are involved in an activity requiring physical and mental prowess in a competitive nature.Hobby would be better for those who would just like to fly them for their own relaxation and enjoyment.

Without the sport of competion, eventially their would be no Birmingham roller hobby.Always strive for excellence in performance, meet and exceed the standard to insure the survival of the species.

I consider rollers are a hobby. But If I was raising and competing with homing pigeons I would consider it a sport.

Like most of you guys said it is the same for me. Hobby first because I enjoye the hell out of it, and sport second as I like to train them and fly the best kit possible.

If you look the definition of these words, they are self explatory....

hobby...An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.
An activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation: Her hobbies include stamp-collecting and woodcarving.

sport...An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

You make your own choice.. How ever you see fit.

For all the years I've been into pigeons (the mid 60's)I consider it a "hobby". Be it racing them or just as a backyard flyer...

Same as everything else. Baseball is a sport and hobby. Hockey is a sport and hobby. Birminghams are a sport and hobby. :)

For this pigeon lady the "Sport" in having Rollers is the competition: World Cup, Fall Fly, etc. The Hobby part of raising birds is the Doves, Fantails, etc...

Yes, I'm a lady who raises and flies Rollers. I also raise several other breeds of pigeons but Rollers are my favorite. I am a member of more than 1 Pigeon Club, Secretary/Treasurer for the AZPC, former 4-H Club leader, etc. Does it really matter if you know that about me or not, that I'm female?
P.S. I did not see any "Proper Headings" in the User Account

I guess that was my mistake for not looking at your account.
As of lately most that have been posting on here are "NOT" filling out their account info. So accuse me for not checking yours..
As far as you being a female. I think it's "GREAT" that females are in this hobby and joining this site.
Don't be offended...don't want to up set the apple cart....lol
