thnks kham..really appreciate the help.does it makes a difference in your birds performance based on what your feeding them..for example if i use cracked corn instead of the mixed bird feed would the performance differ??..and is it good to feed our breeder meat maker cuz that what my dad feed his kings and they produce like crazy..im jsut curious about this..

I wouldnt recommend cracked corn, if you can afford, or have available to you , a good mix would be better. The breeder, meat maker would be ok for breeders. Some fly their kitbirds on a standard pigeon grain mix and do very well. Others use a combination of wheat, milo, and peas. Others use the wheat as a primary feed and suppliment some peas about once a week. If they are flying too high, or too long, some use straight milo to bring them down. Most families of birds vary how they react to different feeds. I`d start with a pigeon grain mix and go from there. fly them for a month or so. then try straight wheat for a few weeks, and so forth. You will need to just see which method works for you and your birds. Good luck with this... Its a lot of time and effort but well worth it to find out what works for you, and your birds. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Hey 530flyer, welcome, The ncrc is having a roller show in Lodi on 28th of Feb. In Mickey Grove park. Come if you can and you can meet all the guys with rollers in the area. Families can come also. There is a playground right next to where they have the roller event and a small zoo in the park. I invite you to come. You can ask local guys in Sacramento area questions and get to know us. People always have to be careful for the pigeon thieves and it can be hard to get to know people in roller clubs but this is one way to get together and not worry someone who had just visited you will come back and steal your birds.
Also its good to fill out the profile. click your name and fill out some info on you if you want to. It really helps to know who you are. Hope you can come to our roller show. Its all about performance there but you always have a few color birds show up too, they bring the lowest prices in the auction for birds. Bill C

Keep-rolling, Yes you can come. It is open to anybody. Some times this is a place to purchase a few birds that are hard to come by. It is five dollars to get into the park and usaully a lunch is provided for everyone. They may want to charge two or three dollars for lunch because not everyone wants birds and everyone is offered lunch. I will have to get back on that part. But its $5 per car to enter so you can car pool with your friends and load the car up. Just bring a box or cage if you might want to buy a few birds. Bill C

530, I have never taken a bird to a show pen. While this is for the performing rollers and most will bring kit birds they are flying or breeder birds that are proven birds. This is a fund raiser for the club.
The auction birds should all be birds that are perfornce based. I dont have any pairs together yet. I wait until the wild birds hatch out young to lessen the loss of young kit birds gettin eaten. Or I would birng a few squeakers to help out the club.
I might come up with a pair of kit birds if I can get them flying again before the auction. But I do not take show birds for the fact that it is a good way to bring home a disease and I ask is it worth it to show a bird just to have many others at your loft die? not for me for a trophy. I could go buy all the trophies I wanted if that was what I was into.
Also take my advice and if you get some new birds from anywhere, you should isolate them from the rest as far away as possible in your yard until three weeks or four weeks. Many times guys have bought new birds and bring them home to have several get a disease and die.
Its not that people enter sick birds. Everyones loft has disease and the birds themselves have bad bacteria in their guts. But if they get stressed it can take them over. One loft may have a mild case of cocci, canker or E-coli but no sick birds since they build an immunity to it like we do when we get the flu then we are imune to the flu. Well pigeons build resistance to some of these things and when you bring in a new bird it can have something your birds are not used to (vise versa)plus they drink in the same water pan and they all get exposed to it. Now you have sick birds.
Make a cage now so you will have something to put them into until they acclimate to your area and you are confident they are not sick and begin to adjust to your food and water and germs in your yard. We all have them germs, but we do not all have sick birds. Bill C

Something else I see sometimes. Young guys dont have enough kit boxes or lofts. If you are young and want another cage. Have your Dad or Mother or Uncle drive you to a construction site. Take a picture of your pigoens and talk to the workers and tell them you are building a pigeon loft and if they have any scrap wood left over if you could come back and get some. Be polite and give them your phone number to call you if they have some old wood.
I would say, " Sir, my name is ---- I am building a pigoen loft and if you have any scrap wood you are going to thow away in the dumpster I would be most greatfull if you could help me out. Here is my phone number sir! will you give it to the man in charge for me. Thank you Sir!"
I work with contractors all the time and most of them are very nice guys but dont have time to talk a lot and want to get back to their work. If one construction site doesnt work out, well keep looking and go to another one. Look in the new papers for free wood also. I would always help out a young man who was polite when I am at work. I've taken a few wood scraps meself by asking the general contrator on the site if I could have some srap two by fours and such. Bill C

great post their Bill down to the tee. 530flyer Ecoli is a normal inhabitant of the digested system in pigeons it has decease potential but usually takes a predisposing condition to allow the opportunity to cause the infection.like stress .viral infection ,intestinal parasites and irritants of the bowel while consuming chemicals while out fielding. one of the predisposing factors in young birds is adenovirus . adenovirus by itself will not cause the decease but in the presence of Ecoli it will allow Ecoli to cause the decease..now listen to this what Bill is telling you.>like mixing or race training or accumulating birds from various sources. signs that can tell are usually birds vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal droppings and lethargy... with that alone I"ll be very careful.. ---------- Ralph
