our birds have no self defense against hawk attacks,so why not invent a device that would help our birds from an attack. i know this sounds ridiculous but think about it for a bit, lots of animals have a self defense mechanism when being attacked.even plants have a self defense system like thorns and poisons to protect themselves against attack.i guess what i'm trying to say is that if a pigeon had some way to protect it self against a hawk it would stand a chance to survive.your probably ask how i came up with this idea, well i was watching t.v. and i seen this little frog get eaten by a fish and this little frog looked like it did not stand a chance against this predator but when this frogs self defense system kicked in the fish spit him out so fast that nothing at all happened to the frog.this is what our birds need, but what is it that we can do to help them in the air.i thought of a electronic device that would shock the hell out of the bop when it tries to take a pigeon in mid air,not kill it but would have it release the bird fast.but how to invent such a device is the question and what would this cost, maybe a suit we could strap to the pigeon that comes off and on real easy and not hinder it in any way so it can perform with no problem.you guys get my idea and i hope you dont think i'm tripping i just think that this is possible and i think it would help our little friends a great deal in the air.

From a biological stand point, breeding is the defense that pigeons have. Basically nature has endowed them to produce lots of babies so that the species survives! I am a biologist.

I would think the roller would get as much shock as what ever had its claws in it. but it might be worth it.

If you notice wild birds are all the same color & when a bop comes into them, they just stick together. If they break from the rest they are dinner. When a bop comes at your pigeons, it is to split them up so he can pick 1 out out to hone in on. If the pigeons did not split he would have problems. Your best defense is to fly birds all similar in appearance, & kit like a glove. I had a competion kit a couple of years ago, they would not split when a bop came through them. I still have the whole kit, either still flying or in the stock pens. I live in a small town & when I fly my birds at home I could lose 5 or 6 a day. So I keep my flyers at my moms a mile north of town & don't lose any. Why? I have not figured that out yet, other than: 1) in town lots of people have bird feeders-I call them drivin restaurants for bops. 2) my moms place is beside a 30 acre swamp & it is loaded with red wing black birds. Have you ever seen a red wing black bird chase a bop out of it's territory. There is also a resident Herrier Hawk pair & a resident Red Tail pair. The Herrier's leave the pigeons alone, the Red Tails basically leave them alone also unless they have the sun to hide in. The Reds might try at the young birds on the roof once in a while. ---------- Yours in the Hobby Don Lunau

Tom. I would NOT recommend doing any of that. Read all the info on BOPs and the USFWS. Just my opinion... ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

I have a friend who raises orientals and birmingham and he tells me the orientals are EASY pickinings for the BOP.
he said the legend that they are better at evading BOP are all a figment of someones IMAGINATION.

bman and George R. ....all I can tell you is, I have a family of "Husband" Oriental Rollers I've been flying for almost 2 yrs now. I have never lost a FOR to a BOP in the sir or landing. My B/H are another story....lol. There are many guys that fly Oriental Rollers all over the U.S. that will "testify" that these amazaing rollers "will outmanuver" hawks and falcons. Just ask them...

Fying smart and not over breeding just to feed them will go along way. Also the type of birds will also play in huge, many just want (or don't know the difference) hot controlled by the roll boneheads, these make for an easy meal compared to a stable solid family. I can certainly see a particular breed that can survive the BOPs easy, it is rare that one of my seasoned old birds even gets snagged. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott
