Thanks Guys

You can get as many different answers as there are guys on here. All rollers go back to Pensom except a few imports of the Whitinghams and fire balls. Pensoms are imports too in the beginning of his birds.

I would say there are not any Pensoms or Plona or Smith birds left but guys did recieve those blood lines and they are still going on today. The more these birds are crossed the farther away from Pensom they get. But many kept them with out crossing anything into their family. Even so they became their family like McCully, Slate and even Jaconettes, but Jacs are by far the most crossed birds due to mass producing and selling of them over the years.

Today you can get the same bloodlines but with a different name. Jay Starley or Ken Easley for example they also are down from Pensom but carry their name and are know as not being crossed with birds outside the family much if at all.

Are they hard to handle. It depends on how you have selected your birds and their back grounds. Most good familys that have good velocity and quality are hard to handle and will sky out if you are not good at controling them through the feed and training. Training being not too much rest or to little but what they need.

Easy to handle are birds that will roll with almost any amount of feed but usually lack quality or velocity.( Usually I said ) Jaconettes are know for this being easy to handle. They will all sky out with too much feed or high pressure days but over all they are good for a beginner to just get a handle on and learn how to fly and feed them, then move on up to a better family and your set for life.

Bill C,
Be careful. When You make broad statements about a certain family of Birds You are talking about many Men's Birds all across this country. To say they will sky out with too much feed or high pressure is not correct. That can happen with a lot of different Families. What is "a better family"? A Family is what a Man makes them after He gets Them. Some Guys make Them better and some Guys make Them worse. You have to start with some Birds that will Roll with Depth, Speed, and Quality, and the Jaconettes will do just that. JMHO

"then move on up to a better family and your set for life"

Bill The Jaccs are the Birds that are winning most of the flys now days they also put up some Big scores.

I have flown several Familys , and I would never waste my time on a family of Birds that takes a long time to come into the spin, Flys high, must be starved to control, and rolls seldom.

George, I mentioned usally for the Jacs just because some do well with them. You and I may have very different expeirices with Jacs depending on who had bred them and what they are like in our neighbor hoods.

My own experience with them is the roll early and fall apart at one and a half years or two years. Not every bird but many. I understand you on what you want and actually I want what you do not. That is I prefer a bird that comes into the roll at 8 months or older. I especailly like birds that come into the roll at 1 year or more. I want a kit of hold over birds rather than 6 month wonders any day. I am not saying my birds are better just that is what I am after.

I used to hear things like, sure those birds are fast but who wants to wait a year and a half to see a bird roll. Plus they are so seldom you have to wait five minutes to see a bird roll.

Funny thing is they all produce early and late birds. I dont have to starve my birds down just to get them to roll either but most do not come into the roll early.

If we have a high pressure day all the kits go up Jaconettes or any other family. Jacs haved their good pos and cons like any other birds. I have a few. They are not my favorites, though. I keep them for a reason.

Once I saw Joe Borges birds fly, that was it. I had to get some and hoped he would help me out, which he did. I would rather have Joe Borges kit birds than Jerry Higgins stock birds. Or any Jaconettes winning big time. To me there is no comparison. But I like the deep, fast velocity, great quality and birds with self control that I have yet to develop in my own birds. But having seen them, I have the vision in my head and it will stay with me as long as I have the birmingham roller. Bill C

Chuck when I said they all sky out, I meant they all sky out no matter what family. Dont take it personal though. Like George said he doesn't want a bird that has to be starved down to get them to roll. I like those kind of birds, even though I don't think you have to starve them, you just have to fly them long enough for them to come into the roll.

I totally agree with you its up to the guy who raises them. But belive me there are plenty of guys out there winning with birds that are not Jac based. You want 15 names placed in the top 10. I have a few Jacs and they are good for frequency, I got to give them that much. LOL Bill C

I would say that.. J Leroy Smith and Plona birds.. are more of a family of birds... than .. Pensom and Plona.

"which bloodline is more easy to handle for a newbie?"
It may depend.. if you want to walk around picking birds off the ground... or be frustrated at times with the feed can.
All families of rollers have some problem or another.
Pick a family of rollers and stick with them for three years and learn as much as you can from them.
Why do you think the harder to fly rollers are still around?..
You can work on your own family of rollers by sticking to a family ..already out there.... and not cross breeding right off the bat.
You can learn to fly... any family of rollers it just takes time and experiance.

Pensom imported rollers into United states.
The pink, orange and purple rollers are color breeders here in States breeding colors into these birds that pensom imported.
