----------Help me out folks..I have been breeding rollers since 1956 (no brag, just fact)..and I have never seen a time like the past couple of years when guys are cutting the bands off of their birds. The only reason I can figure is..#1..the birds are stolen #2 they can claim the bird to be any family they want #3 ?????? Any help here. De Oppresso Liber

To me, there is no good reason for anyone cutting bands. I automatically say that birds are stolen if the bands are cut.
It could also be #2 like you suggested but I would never buy an unbanded bird anyway.

I would say #1, #2 i wouldnt say to much, just because if they want to claim a family or strain and they dont or there young wont roll, that would really make them look stupid, And looking stupid is even worse then stealing for some guys. ----------

I have not heard about this happening in my area, but could it be that they are culls and the breeder does not want to have to deal with people who got the birds at a flea market or feed store and want to breed them? #2, A breeders records are only as good as the integerity of the breeder and they can be changed at the whim of that breeder. Until they start doing DNA testing as they do in the horse industry you will have to rely on the honesty of the breeders. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

I agree with the others- cut bands are signs of theives or birds gotten rid of as culls and the owner doesn't want to be associated with them. Here's another reason that is a more recent situation. Some people that live in home owner associations don't band their birds in fear that a neighbor may find one dead or see one roll down. They see the band and associate the bird with one of yours because they have seen your birds flying but never paid much attention. Flyers in this situation may also cut bands off of birds they acquire to fly. A tough hobby for us with BOP's, homeowner associations, pigeon haters, etc. But these things will never drive me out nor take away the fun and comaderie I gain by having rollers! Sincerely, Don M. ok well if that is the case what happens if the breeder ran out of bands or forgot to band that particular bird and I have two birds from well known breeders that I pulled right out of there breeding loft and they are birds they bred so what do you say to that kind of issue ____________________ The man in black Bling-Bling-Benny-Boy city-side-lofts.piczo.com Rocket-Rollers

Bruce, I have been hearing rumors of theft in your area. Did Joe get hit again?
Sounds like #1 to me.
As for myself there are only (2) reasons for birds with no bands. I get about 2 a year where I banded them too young and they manage to pull the band off. I only notice a weaning time.
My wife goes to the auction to buy and sell chickens. I will cut the bands off my culls and send them with her. They go in a cage and are sold as pigeons. They are not advertised as rollers, and do not have a roller band on them.

The reason for me not having banded birds is because sometimes I go away for a couple of weeks and dont get a chance to do it. ive herd of people slipping bands on birds after they are older. if some one cuts a band because they stold the bird or dont wanna give that cirntain breeder credit,, then that person has to sleep with that, and some will do this with no problem. I know this year people might see alot of unbanded birds in my kit's dosent matter to me as stand ferm behind my loft and what I fly. also we dont have any young bird flys so the band dosent really matter. Now as far as buying or sellin a unbanded bird, thats up to the situation, if you are looking at the bird on the ground or in a cage,,, me I wouldnt buy it,,, however if I got my eye busted by it in the air then I would be willing to pay top dollar reguardless of the band issue. Be honest with yourself and, what you want. And if you cut bands for negitive reasons then, you will soon relize that cheaters never win..LOL

I know a few guys that cut off their bird’s bands in my area. Some of the reasons are: They are given birds that didn’t work out for them so not to offend the person they got then from they cut the bands off and send them to the feed store, you would be surprised as to how many well known families (culls) are sent to the feed store lol. They also cut bands off bands to prevent people asking for background information on the culls they breed, like who are the parents of the bird, how did the bird do in the air, or want a pedigree. Some people just don’t have the time or the heart to cull their birds out properly. If you go to person house and all their stock birds have no bands they maybe stolen or they just might be culls. The buyer should always beware from whom they buy their birds.

Steve, steve, steve... those chickens and cows you eat are healthy too. LOL
I mentined this before on this site when some guys were posting pictures of birds with out bands. My concerns that is.
I think I will bring up to our club that we might want to band anyone selling or buying birds at the clubs events with out banded birds just to keep the new guys buying bands. The fact is your record will be hogwash if you do not have bands to keep track of your pairs and everyone should band their birds. If money is an issue you can buy old bands cheep and just make a record of the birds real year it was born on paper. Just a thought. Bill C

Bruce......aside from #1 and #2, the age of a bird can't be known without a band. The only reason I remove a band is when a bird dies in my possesion for one reason or another. If I can re-use it I do...That's all I can come up with. ---------- Fly High and Roll On

some backyard flyers may not even use bands, I suppose it would lessen the chances of them being stolen as well? Pete

Could be those 2 reason...Another reason...If you breed in a ind. cage, sometime their legs get stuck on the botton floor because of the band, it could lead to broken leg. ----------

Ok,
Just because a band is cut off does not mean that it is stolen....but it does raise some eyebrows....I have some Stock birds that dont have bands that I got from Mort....some guys either forget...dont have the money for bands...the band falls off....or they just plain dont care.....I was told once...do the bands make them roll..if that was the case...i would have three bands on each let...LOL
I cut off my bands...when the bird dies...or I cull it...plain and simple...I dont want a bird that is dead tracked back to me...if I sell them as feeder birds to somebody etc...the bands come off....
So we cant jump to conclusions....but if someone is claiming the bird is from xyz breeder and it does not have bands...that may not be the case.....plus you have to know the breeder too..to make sure that the birds are legite....

Everything you said Paul is true but Mort should band his birds too! LOL The reason is when he was here judging our birds, I talked to him about two birds he sent me and that he sent one white grizzle and red-white flight. I asked for red or blue checks. He couldnt remember much about the birds. If he had banded them he would have been able to research it at home and find out why I was getting those creams out of them? They were in an individual cage so no hanky panky going on there. Bill
