Okay manny, i'll try to send you some pictures. the first bird is a lavender badge
The lavender color is technically ash red with the spread factor This is a silver bar marked
The silver bar is a dilute of a blue bar ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

Manny, That is correct. When you see it in hand it is very obvious. Andrew, that second bird is not a silver, it is another lavender, ash red spread ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

Far be for me to rain on anybody's parade, but there are 3 colors of pigeons, ash red, blue and brown in that order of dominance. The first bird I posted is an ash red spread, commonly referred to as lavender. The second bird is a silver bar, a dilute of blue. Some of you need to read some Levi, Quinn or Hollander writings and get your colors straight. Mealy is an old misnomer often used by the homer guys. And robbo, I breed for performance and the color comes with it. I get reds, blues in bars and checks. There are dilute, spread and indigo factors in my family but who cares when they are in the air. ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe

What is very confusing for guys new to the hobby is that the roller fraternity, at least in England anyway do not use the correct terminology. What a racing man may call a mealy or dark ,mealy or a strawberry we may have several names for including dun, but a dun is a dilute Black not a red pigeon at all, see what you are up against? Even us old gits get confused. The Picture above of the Lavender is also a little misleading as it looks like a red bar (mealy). You can tell it is a spread ash bird by the light silvery color of the head plumage. When a bird has a full dose of spread and it is a (now I will use several terms so we know what we mean) and it is a red bar, mealy dun, or red cheq, it will be the same silver color as the top bird but it will have no bars. So look at the top bird and imagine it with no bars and it will be a better idea of what a lavender is like. If it is a cock and is carrying blue it will have some black flecks, or be tick marked. So to see what we are up against, that bird that is correctly called a Spread Ash Red, may also be called a Lavender, a silver (wrong and misleading but between freinds we know what we mean) or even a barless mealy, also incorrect as Barless is a different gene than spread. So to recap, spread is the factor that spreads the colur of the bars and tail over the entire feather areas. It reduces the clumping of pigment from the bar area, and to varying degrees, it spreads the darker pigment evenly over the body. It is the facor that turns a blue series bird into a black. A barred bird under the influence of the spread gene will tend to be lighter in color than a cheqer. As others have said a silver is actually a dilute blue, a dun is a dilute black and a yellow is a dilute red. That's enough colur for now I'm getting a hedache, lol regards, Pete.

Pete, you got it all correct. That "lavender" hen I posted is not the best example of a lavender as she shows too much barring, but she was the best example of a lavender that I had a picture of and she is one of my favorite birds. I am not really a big fan of lavender but the spread factor is in my birds so I get a few of them each year. That particular bird is the best spinner I raised in 03. ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe
