what's the best thing to do when BOP are around?..can't fly my birds because of them. But when do i know when i should fly my birds again? my birds where attack today. luckly none of my birds were taken. It came so close from getting one of my birds. what should i do? i'll probably lock them down for a while and see what happens.

Did I bring you bad luck. I mentioned how can you fly right now on another post?

I wait until mid Feb to pair up so the squeakers will be ready to fly it in mid March. That is when the wild birds are raising young too and food it plentyful. You will have a problem until then most likely.
Most guys have pairs together now, but we will still have some cold weather and the birds are not as good with cold foggy days. Plus they will get strong on the wing if you do not fly them at the right time. So I would wait until then to fly young.

As for your flying kit now. You may have to wait until mid or late Feb or even March to fly again with out BOP.

It is best not to fly for a week if they get hit. It will cause the birds to fly in fast circles if they are chased day in day out.

Change the time you fly if they are still comming around in March.

Starve them out is best, that is make them find food else where. Bill

ey bill c..doesnt it mess up your kit after it gets hit by BOP once or twice??..i use to have a decent kit with decent perfomances until BOP showed up and chased them a few times..it messed up the whole kit..they would fly and perform but not as hard and frequent as before BOP showed up..flies faster than nornal paste...if thats the case how do i get them to get back on track???
or is it just how im feeding them?..

Hifly11, LOL I do not know? It all depends on your migrations or if they stay around for a while. I think you were joking but the same would apply actually. Wait until your local birds mate up and build a nest, that is the best time to pair your birds together. I think in Michigan your spring will come later than here in Northern Calif valley.

530flyer, It does mess up the kit for a while. Especially young birds but older birds will get over it quicker but if they get chased everytime you let them out, they will be scared even though they fly. Imagine a big Grizzley bear after you everytime you go outside your home. You never would feel comfortable going out. Really the best to do is wait a two or three weeks and it should start getting better. They will come back into the routine after a week or two of flying them.

As for my birds I have several. More than I should have but I love the birds and have the space for them. I have a few Jaconettes, that is what I started out with. They are frequent but not the best in quality, I do get some good birds out of them but not in a good percentage though. They are also the most unstable birds I've had as far as roll downs or birds bumping in and out of the box. I only have a few I had picked out of the air myself left because I gave the rest away.
I also have a pair from Dave Henderson and Joe Urban. I really like the Urban birds and Daves birds are great too.
I have several squeakers I got from Joe Borges and those I am picking the best each year from the air so I will have proven birds eventually. They have good quality and velocity. Joe Borges birds goes back to Herb Sparks, Mucully and Slate birds. Anyway I did not get proven birds just kit birds and am working on getting a few solid pairs to work with out of them.

Don't worry ever about getting squeaker from a guy. He might be selling you his best bird hatched that year and if he sees it fly, he will not sell it or give it away in most cases. So I encourage people to get squeakers and fly them out or breed from them and pick out your new breeders from the air. Anyway that is the back ground of most of my birds. Bill C

This thought just came to me today on this subject.
I had a bon fire going today and let out my kit.
Didnt see any bops. had one here yesterday.. It got me thinking. I dont think I ever had one come in while I had a fire going outside. Maybe the smoke in the air keeps them away. I have thought about this concerning my birds and It doesn`t seem to affect them.
I`m going to do some watching for this now.
I know it wont help those who live in an area that prohibits bon fires but for some of us it might help. Fire is a natural deterant to wildlife...

I like that idea, Butch!

Oh, and I love fires.

After the coals get hot, rake a few out, shovel some in your smokey and throw a rib eye on. But first, take some 'taters and cut 'em up, lay 'em out on tin foil, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle Lipton onion soup over them, seal up and bury in the coals. they'll be done in about 20 minutes and taste great with the rib eye.

One eye on the steak, one on the sky.

What a great day! :)
