What is the best size for a Mobile/Portable kit box that will fit in the back of a pickup and how many birds will make the best kit for flying mobile? Janet

I tried this once, the kit coop was 3x4 I believe...I too waited for some birds for a couple hours..I was only 2 miles from home...They were sitting on my house when I got there...

The small portables that the Europeans fly from are 16" X 16" X 24"
I built my portable 24" X 24" X 36" you could fit a couple of these in the bed of a pick-up.
The Gentleman I got my start from was flying from kit boxes on the back of an S-10.
I'm pretty sure if you use the search you'll see some others.

Janet Portable lofts come in 3 classes. 1. The wafer coop 2'x3' to 4'square...usually 12 to 18 inches high. 2. Small portable which is a 2-man operation and 3. Trailer loft. Wafer kits about 6' square can hold up to 12 birds. Bigger lofts can hold more. It is easier to handle a kit of under 15 birds. If you break them in properly you will hardly ever lose them and can even return later and pick up any stragglers. The pictures by Snake Doctor are a good example. Al

I forgot to say I have a 4" PVC Clean out plug in the top for the trap, it works very well. As soon as I have some squeaks to wean they will be fed and watered in the box and I will start flying them from the box, I already have the droppers (Indian Fantails) Trained ---------- "Semper Fi" SD

Thanks for the info and the photos. Interesting... I was thinking about using the lime green color instead of the "blaze" orange. Flying mobile is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I'm going to give it a try. Janet

Janet, These video's on You-tube are good examples of what can be done flying mobile, Nico Giarard is the present French Champion.
The Video that Donnie James has is also very helpful and shows a different box design.
Jon Lahman's site also has a Wafer kit box shown and good information about flying mobile. http://www.angelfire.com/ks/rollerpigeon/

i built a double kit box on a trailer many years ago. this was my only loft, so i took it to parks and open areas whenever i wanted to fly the birds. the small, easily moved boxes i think are very nice, and much easier to build and move. trailers are more expensive to build, and you can use any car to pull them, but the small boxes are an excellent alternative. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY
