fly birds 50lbs wheat, 50lbs barley, 25lbs milo and I give them more or less depending on fly time. I might add, these are mature fly birds.

I fly mostly on wheat, peas,Milo and sometimes barley, in that order of content, but mostly wheat. It varies depending on fitness, form, flying time, flying height, birds weight, time of year (temperature)etc. In winter I will suppliment with a good mix, that includes oily seed like safflower and small corn. breeders get a selection froma cafeteria style feeder, with wheat, Barley, peas, safflower, and milo.+ minerals + grit. Feeding a flying kit is an art that is difficult to explain by writing about it. Pete

Raffi59, In the winter when it is cold I feed my birds chicken scratch grain, and let them have all tey can eat in about 30 minutes. This mix has corn, wheat, milo, some oats etc... They will pick through to get what they want.. Some times they eat the corn other times not...
In the better weather I like to feed just wheat and milo 50/50 to the kit birds..
I feed all my breeders "Chicken" laying pellets free choice..Right now I am using an 18% blend..

In my opinion all pigeons are mature at a year.. They can breed at 6 months, but so can 14 year old children..I like my birds to come in at 4-5 months and progress from there..You will get differing opinions on this next statement...I believe that rollers are fully mature at 12 months of age..Anything gained after that is just learned or life experience...Some say some birds cannot stand the test of time etc..

I actually don't mind such repetitive questions because each fancier maybe feeding different kinds of grain and certain ratios. In homing world, most of the time it is the question of what ratio to feed the birds say what percentage of corn to feed, etc. There seems to be semi-standard in roller world: 50/50 wheat/milo and vary the ratio based on the birds performance.

Yessir Rod, If you need to slim your birds down just feed em more milo and ease up on the wheat for about a week. Feed straight milo for three or four days if you need quick results. Just remember to let em out three or four at a time or they might commit mass suicide. ---------- V99 blue sky single beat in cadance performing now earth beckons the winged drawn breath is let quickly forth orchestral movement follows

Velo99,
Thanks for the tip. I suppose you mean that they will die if feed milo alone because they won't have much energy to fly and be a rolldown?

Rod, milo isnt a "stand alone" feed like wheat is. It is pretty low in actual nutrients. It mostly has air and carbs. It is good for a little activity to your kit on a short term basis. If you feed it solo you have to feed almost twice as much to do the job. I use it for control and activity. Different ratios of wheat and milo will change the way your kit performs. ---------- V99 blue sky single beat in cadance performing now earth beckons the winged drawn breath is let quickly forth orchestral movement follows
