Today i decided to let out my new birds to fly with my kit, however two of them didn't return. One of them has a 144 04 HFRF band on. Well hopefully they return. but chances are they are not gonna return.

Lfty08, that band is a High Five Roller flyers band. Joe Urban and Dave Henderson had those bands for a few years and sold them to the HFRF guys. There is a good chance you have some good bird. There are only a select few in Northern Calif that have those bands. If you want I could possibly find out who bought those bands and let you know. Maybe your cousin knows already though. A bird banded 04 is five years old and was probably given as a breeder bird. You should breed from those older birds and not fly them out. Fly out the young and it will tell you if they are good breeders. But you need to fly them everyday for 3 or 4 months or until they start to get rolling then fly every other day. Hope this helps. XRoller i had them for two weeks now therefore i thought they would stay but i guess not. Supposely that should be long enough. But i don't know why they never came back.

Bill C these are birds from some of my friends in Marysville. He used to be an associate member of HFRF, but stop because he went off to college. I guessing he had HFRF bands too and probably banded these birds. These birds might probably be families from Joe and Dave. However, they are probably mix with other families cuz i don't know. He didn't say much when i gave these birds to me. He just told me to try them out or breed them. I was gonna breed them but i wanted to see the quality of the bird first. That's i waited two weeks making sure they know the my yard and place but i guess they just took off. I didn't see much out of them because all they did was circle up high and then disappear. Anywase it's okay.

I remeber Ger Xiong and another young guy who flew in the HFRF for a while. I think they did have some good birds to start out with.
But you can alway get a few good birds in the NCRC show if you are able to make it. Look at those birds from Grant that are donated. Everyone there would like a pair like that. Someone gets to own them.

You can also buy name and address bands and have your phone number put on them so if they get lost they can be returned. But it wont work for older birds though, just the young ones you raise.

The ncrc is going to be selling NCRC bands at the show and you guys are welcome to buy some. We just ask if someone calls you with a lost bird you be sure to pick it up so we do not look bad to the people who finds a bird and trys to return it and then have the guy say let it go I do not want it back. hey bill can you tell me if there is a difference in putting your birds in a dark kit box and a light kit box..does it affect the birds kitting ability and performance?...

well i have a kit box that is always expose to light all day long so my birds gets the light all day long not like those usual dark kit boxes..and my 08 kit birds are not kitting together unlike the ones i have in the darker kit box...is it b/c they are still too young or should i put them into a darker kit box?>..

530flyer, I have found that one is not better than the other. It is good right before a competition to darken the kit box to get a few extra rolls out of them but I have both wood fronts, darker and wire fronts, lighter and I think they both work fine. Sunshine is good for the birds too. Some guys put burlap over the front of a kit box to make it darker for a comp fly.

As for your birds, they should kit with either kit box. If they are very young they dont kit right away but after flying them for two weeks they should get with the program and kit.

If you have one or two out birds they will pull other birds out of the kit. So most guys cull the out birds. If you have room and another kit box you could fly problem birds in that group and see if they shape up with more feed and training otherwise you might want to cull the ones that wont stay in the group.

The breeder birds might have a problem with thowing you out birds also. I dont know this at all, I am just thinking. But if they were an out bird and you breed from an outbird you will get a lot of out birds. Can the guy you got your birds from tell you anything about the breeders? That would really be a big help to you.

Rollers should kit withing the first 10 days to 14 days of flying them as young birds. After that they should fly in a kit. But if you have had them locked down for a while they might not kit well in the first few days.

You really need to be consistant with flying them and right now is might not be a good time. March is much better to fly birds. You want to fly young birds that dont roll everyday in one kit box and birds that roll every other day in another kit box. But you need to fly them all the time with out several days locked up. This really helps them work together.

Its hard on young guys who dont have room or space for four kit boxes but the more kit boxes you the better. So you could put the best rollers in one to fly together and then the ones that dont roll and the new youngest birds we call squeakers in training in a third box ect.

Most important is to get up early before school or before work and fly your kit. (In March) and be consistant with that. You will get roll out of most any birds if this is done. Many times it is mismanagement with rollers. You are learning and you will learn from trial and error also.

Sorry for such a long reply. If you cant fly everyday because of BOP then I would hold them in until March and then fly everyday. Bill C
