You were lucky it was a tweety bird. Remember that when you release your birds after a long lock up, your birds will be unorganized and sluggish and easy picking. Remember that.

Waiting impatiently for the bop to leave. But looks llike he is not going no where. I fly my birds in Compton and I tested the skies this weekend and took one of my birds and five minutes later another falcon tried to take another. Luckly I only let out ten birds, but he still got me. I guess Ill wait till the beginning of march. Art Gaona

Yea you can't always see the BOP. They can be just sitting and hiding in trees waiting. Or they can be far away flying and see the pigeons from a great distance.

jnyce, Most areas in Calif will have better flying in March. I have not put pairs together yet but will this weekend or maybe the next weekend. The main reason is I time them close to when the wild birds build their nests and then my squeakers will be ready to fly out the same time the wild birds begin to move about the trees. It really makes a difference in flying a young kit that is not going to fly in fast circles scared all the time.
I've seen already here where magpies are taking sticks to the tallest trees. They dont even have leaves yet but the birds are staking out nest sites. Once the Robins, black birds, starlings and blue Jays and all the rest are nesting with birds we will have free shies for a while.
The worst time to test the sky is right before a storm or right after a storm. They know a cold and rainy day is coming and want to fill the stomach for that cold spell. The BOP wait for the weather to pass and then they are relentless. Good luck. BillC

Do I live in paradise? I fly year around with very little attacks. You just gotta know what time to fly and not to fly. ---------- Good Game Loft

I am just about 45 minutes north of you jerry and I have been seeing a couple redtails, but no falcons or coopers lately. Weather has been real nice and it is getting tempting, but I think I'll hold out for March-April.
