I started with 7 pair plus 1, so 15 birds. I bred from them while I was flying them. Thats not what I recomend to anyone else to do.
I think 10-25 is good starter size. Having at least 10 makes it more of a kit, instead of a handful of birds flying together. They will kit better and behave more predictably. More than 25 and it gets hard to manage for feed and condition, too many individual needs. ---------- Jon

Start with the best birds you can afford, and fly them, learn them, and raise some out of the best you have. Keep it simple have fun, dont get discouraged, and learn. Go see other birds, join a club, and participate in flys. Then go and get some better birds if you dont already have them....Dont try to be Bill Pensom the first couple years...

8 birds and kept adding from there was doing like Jon did bred them and flew them and added some more till I got a kit of 20.see back in 1999 I was immune to BOP.so I would breed and fly the breeders even when on eggs got them down in 30 minutes and they come in and sit on eggs and again the next day those were the good o days until the BOP starting coming that change everything .nothing like exercising your breeders they were healthy happy that way...not no more ..prisoners 4 ever now unless they not producing the goods back into the kitbox.... ---------- Ralph

If I remember correctly I started off with 12 old birds and all cockbirds at that. I settled to their new kitbox. They were used to get my feet wet so to speak.... ---------- Fly High and Roll On
