How many tail feathers are they supposed to have? Never heard that the BR had such a standard. I know the OR have tail feather count standard, but it is 12 or something.

BR normally have 12 tail feathers, have seen 13 on occasion but never more. My guess is that this bird has a little OR behind it

All BR have Oriental behind them, just like tipplers and high flyers. That is why we have droopy wings rollers on occasions. This is just a throw back my guess. Don't forget that a roller is just an aggregate of its ancestry.

Jay,
I have never had any droopy wings or odd number tail feathers on my BR! The OR behind BR is so far back that I find it difficult to believe anyone is getting OR throwbacks unless they have been added recently.

Jay, droopy wings have nothing to do with anything, it is caused by a weak or even wore out back from working hard.
You will see it on birds with alot of age , these same birds would/will hold wings up with the back in condition or when they were younger, the birds with a weak back will always droop.

it may be just like the crest....years of inbreeding and some turns out with the crest....it could be something like that

Tail feather counts above the common number of 12 is nothing out of the ordinary. I've seen it in every pigeon breed I've raised. I've had helmets produce birds with only 10 tailfeathers. I've had Wests with 11 primaries (they are only supposed to have 10). I've raised birds with 13 tail feathers in seriously every breed that I've raised. If you only raise a small number of birds a year, you may not see it. being that I typically raise 200-300 birds a year, I tend to see things occasionally. My winning show family of black selfs (wests) is very inbred for the past 10 years. They breed very true and consistent. Last year I produced a 13 tail feathered bird from them. It happens and it doesn't suddenly signify that their is a worm in the woodpile.
If everyone who reads this thread would go out and count the tailfeathers of every pigeon on their property, I'll make a bet at what you'll hear next.

Fact is we don't count tailfeathers on rollers so it has happened to people and they didn't even know it.

Brian,
Obviously I haven't counted the tail feathers on all my birds. But I just counted them on all 12 pairs of my stock birds. All have 12 feathers!!

Count them all Joe. I have over 25 pair of stock birds in my Wests and none have more than 12 tail feathers, but every few years I get one with more than 12. I don't count my rollers tail feathers. I've had one in the past that for some reason I counted, maybe when I was notching the tail, that only had 10. A friend had one he showed me with 13. It was a very inbred family of 514 bird family birds. Its a reproducible anomaly. The one year I produced the bird with 11 primaries on both sides, I bred from it to see if it would produce it and the first round one of the young had 11 on one side and 10 on the other. If I recall correctly I believe some homer guys told me that is a trait they love to see in their racers. I don't know what advantage an extra tail feather or two would do for a roller. Maybe give it greater agility to manuever in flight or better stopping power for landing?
